The Mantic Abyssal Dwarfs Ready their Chaotic Chargers
May 24, 2012 by brennon
With Kings of War getting a Hardback Rulebook for its 2nd Edition soon some new models must be on the horizon from Mantic Games. One of these new models will be the rearing Abyssal Dwarf Halfbreeds!
These Abyssal Dwarfs use speed and brute shunting force to bring down their enemies and the models look rather nice, in their rearing stances.
They do appear to have the same thing as other Dwarfs from Kings of War in that the detail between areas of armour don't seem all that well defined.
Still if you're an Evil Dwarf player then these models will surely get you interested. Even if I now have to write a strongly worded Grudge against you...
Will you be pre-ordering them when the time comes?

These guys really look like they pack some heavy punch besides of speed. With these Abyssal Dwarves and Kings of War are starting to have some appeal to me.
I agree the detail seems a bit soft – it’s like the ideal model for a Halfbreed had its master sculpt eroded. However otherwise I like these, they’re certainly brutal with those greatweapons and the demonic-styled armour that looks like it’s been hammered out in some hellish forge. They use some existing sculpts for the heads I believe but the variety of them should look good and the restic material they’ll be cast in should make them easier to work with.
The Mantic painting style doesn’t lend itself well to photography imho and it may be that which is giving the impression of soft detailing?
Could be a thicker layer of paint I suppose…maybe there’ll be an unboxing, then I’ll know for sure.
I hope they do what Relic did and get Worthy to paint them. They look nice but not Worth Painting nice.
Shetland Dwarfs?
There models appear great however my only concern in their size. Mantic’s boarboys/goreriders, whilst great models, turned out to be a clusterf@ck as they were almost as small as elves! Totally a fail from Mantic, despite being great sculpts.
Poosh, pretty sure Mantic realizes their plastic/resin mix shrinks a fair amount. The shrinking has been planned since the Gore Riders. So either they used a larger mold (and lost a bit of detail) or they have changed their mix a little and it causes less or no shrinkage. Armies from their first year or two were very hit and miss (different sculptors, different materials). Originally, I accepted a bit of this for the low price of models and well written Kings of War rules. That said, Mantic’s recent releases have all been great. Corporation is brilliant and Veer-myn look… Read more »
Oh, I thought it was just a one-off with the Goreriders. Didn’t notice any issue with my Mounted Revs (calling them that, makes them sound cool, like a 30s gang with leather jackets).
Mantic’s dwarfs and elves were acceptable and given a good paint job actually become good somehow but yeah I agree, Mantic have really upped their game.
Oh, and Kings of War is on it’s 3rd Edition, first ever hardback.
Ehm that paintjob is not good for display quality, i really like the minis but painted like that doesn’t make them shine ( or… they shine too much for me -.- )
From the look of that model I’d say they applied a wash very heavily to it. Fast and efficient, but maybe not the best technique for a display model.
