The Latest Hordes Mini is Gonna Sleigh You
April 4, 2013 by dracs
Gargantuans Week may be over but you can still get excited about Hordes, especially as Privateer Press have two new releases on the horizon.
The first is the new Epic sculpt for Lylyth, one of the most feared warlocks of the Legion of Everblight.
I love this miniature. The sleigh looks truly imposing with wicked barbs covering it at every angle. Everything about this seems to say that it will bring some serious pain to anyone who gets in its path.
The other miniature that has been revealed to us is an addition to the Trollbloods. When this guy gives someone the axe it is more than just a metaphor.
The Troll Axer is a full blooded Troll. With an axe. This means that not only can he deal some serious damage he can definitely take it, his regenerative abilities allowing him to shrug off all but the worst injuries. It's just a flesh wound.
The miniature, while not the most dramatic in the Hordes range, really captures the sense of just how tough these guys are. Everything from the threatening stance to the facial expression suggests this is not someone you want to mess with.
Are these good additions to your Hordes forces? Will they open up any new tactics for you?
I’m sorry. I just can’t… I can’t take that sleigh seriously. The details are nice for the most part (the skis aren’t). It’s a well-sculpted sleigh. But it just reeks of an evil-santa vibe that feels out of place (the snow isn’t helping). It’s a good thing they didn’t preview it on April 1. Makes me glad I’m not a Legion player. Takes some of the sting out of not being able to use the archangel with my Circle.
I am soooo putting my koldun lord on one of these
Why not just give the Butcher a fluffy white beard and let him have it?
Actually… yeah !
If the price is right, I may get that sleigh just to put a santa-mini on it… I really like it, especially the special reindeer (which are clearly no beast I know of, and have laughable proportions that exclude them from any earth cervidae sub-species, but they look cool nonetheless).
I think proportion is really the problem here (though I have no problem with the reindeer since these aren’t Earth creatures anyway). Those skis are just laughably large. I think it would work better if the skis were smaller (in every dimension really) and the whole sleigh affair were just thinner and more menacing-looking. Right now it looks like a (jagged metal) hot-air balloon basket suspended between two giant (jagged metal) candy canes. It’s just cartoonish in proportion. Paint it red and it looks like something you could conceivably see in a mall in December.
In a mall in December… or in an unexpected Xmas special in a Dark Eld** codex… 🙂
I don’t know. Yes, the skis are outrageously big… basically, the whole piece is outrageously camp, and maybe that’s what I like about it.
I think I like it for all the wrong reasons… Maybe the artist meant this sculpt to be taken seriously. Then again, maybe it’s a little tongue in cheek… It’s a thin line !
The hair and cloak streamed out behind the archer as she drew back her bow.
Just as well the Reindeer aren’t going that fast as there is no frikkin driver! *CRASH!!*
Thankfully they are just plodding along looking for Fly Agaric.
Well chibi, if she can magically control monstrous warbeasts without a remote control joystick, I think she can handle a couple of infernal reindeer. With the size of the sleigh, it’s unlikely they can pull it all that fast anyway.
I quite like it to be honest 😛 The steeds look better than the recent cavalry previews at least.
I currently don’t have a hordes faction and legion seem to be tempting me more and more, especially after the battle report and in depth look at the Gargantuans book.
I’m going to try to proxy santa Lyl a few times to get a feel for her. (a wise choice before you buy any model, especially a $65 one). If I like her I’m thinking of making my own substitute for the sleigh for her to ride. Perhaps one of those reaper dragons would be a more appropriate mount for one of Everblight’s chosen.
That “Legion of Desertblight” fella will have his work cut out
That new Lylyth looks amazing but she is really difficult to hide. Even more so than new Morvahna. That Troll Axer looks rather menasing like he means business.
I really like the Lylyth — she has a great Narnia Snow Queen vibe — but unless there’s a decent way of giving the chariot wheels it’s going to look a bit silly if your Legion aren’t snow-themed.
This Christmas, Mrs clause is coming to blighty and she has a bow! I really like the model, think it has a great feel to it but yeah need to have a snow theme for it to look right.
I like the lylyth amd the sleigh, always was a sucker for chicks with wheels(oops) might put that in hovermode…..
The model is fine, but I think I’m going to go slightly off-topic and say I don’t really care for any of the really large based models PP produce. Part of the attraction of this hobby, was that it had a relatively small foot print, with regards to what potentially makes up an army, as I don’t really have as much spare room (what with having a small child now). However, I can’t really justify ever getting one of these big models. Now, some people might say, “that’s fine, these models are just a different way to play the game,… Read more »
Fear not! We’ve seen the previews of cavalry and some new solos for the next book (which has something to do with a V, Vengeance maybe?) so while they may release the odd colossal here and there (Rhulic and Convergence, maybe Karchev caster colossal?), I think they’re returning to the smaller footprint models.
I see what you mean, and I agree.
There is a size-creep now, in most games. The GW big beasties, the PP colossals, and even the Inifnity TAGs…
It’s not to everyone’s tastes, and not everyone has an airbrush. Still, the models are mostly nice.
I think part of the reason for the size creep is economics. Miniatures are not the highest margin items on the retail shelf, and they’re selling to a perpetually niche audience. When you start getting to the international distribution phase of your business, it’s hard to maintain a healthy cash flow without either dramatically increasing your sales volume or starting to offer some higher margin products. I think there’s basically two paths for these companies: 1) Keep selling the smaller minis and end up a very niche company with very high international prices and a necessarily smaller customer base (most… Read more »
I think miniature companies have always tried to make big beasties (every faction in every game had to have its siege engine, its dragon, etc.) but it wasn’t readily feasible in good proportions before the advent of resin, and, more importantly, better casting, and the reduction in price of such materials and technology. Now, they’re able to make them really big, and to scale with 28 or 32mm, when such sizes were only the realm of plastic airfix-style models or actual toys and merchandising figures made in huge quantity with different standards by bigger companies still. When single bedroom/basement companies… Read more »
actually love the sleigh model but as most people have stated cant take it seriously with the ski’s… smaller skis may work as i will be trying snow themed legion but those skis are to… well… fancy.
The troll axer looks great and is helping with my lean towards trolls as a second faction especially since i lost interest in skorne!
I’m woundering how long it will be till someone puts lillith in a Red Dress with white trim and paints the steeds with red noses
I say, give it a few months.
They were smart to release this for Easter and not Christmas… lol
some of the guys at TTN last night had the idea of replacing Lilith with Butcher, painting a white beard on butcher and then modelling a khadoran war dog in front of the dears also pulling the sled
