Kickstarter Raises Loka Up Into the Air
March 12, 2013 by dracs
Only 12 days left for the Loka kickstarter, but still the stretch goals are being broken. The Air Faction is now fully funded, which leaves only the Ice set still to go.
As I have said, the next chess style play set we can expect to see is the Ice force and we're starting to be shown some of the pieces fully painted up and ready to play, like this pawn painted by Golem Painting Studio.
It looks as if in Loka the phrase "as cold as the grave" is more than just a simile.
To help tempt that cash out of your wallets a whole bunch of awesome new goodies have also been added to the kickstarter, including T-shirts and this awesome four sided chess clock.
This is what you want if even fantasy chess doesn't have the thrills you need and want to really challenge yourselves.
As you can see the kickstarter is bounding from strength to strength and it can't be long until we see the chilly forces of the ice kingdom stepping onto the board. The minis are excellent with a really cool design and with goodies like the four way chess clock how can you not be tempted to chip in?
How many of you have already pledged your support? If you haven't why not head over to the kickstarter now?
Does anyone know what materials they’re using for the chess pieces? I’ve painted a couple of Dreadball teams so far and like the standard Mantic resin – but it’d feel a bit lightweight for a chess set.
I asked their Twitter account but didn’t get a reply.
There was a comment on the Kickstarter at one point and I think I heard it in an interview with Neil Shuck from Meeples and Miniatures; it’s going to be more like Fantasy Flight plastic so more durable than the usual “restic” but still maintaining a high level of detail.
Cheers. Assuming the demo stuff is comparable to the production stuff, the detail is excellent. It’s just the heft that’s missing – though now I think of it each piece has a nice big plinth I could putty fishing weights in if they are a bit lightweight.
Sadly, some backers have dropped out and as at the time of writing, the current funding level is back below the Air faction unlock point 🙁
I was going to invest in this Kickstarter (my first) but then noticed it was not set for shipping ’till Dec 2013. I was not prepared to wait 10 months for what is essentially a glorified chess set which is already mostly finished (yes expanded rules not withstanding).
Sorry 🙁
If by mostly finished you mean not finished at all, then you are right.
The purpose of the kickstarter is to fund the tooling for plastics, so no nothing is finished yet, especially the models.
I’ll be very surprised if we wait all the way to dec to see this… My guess is they’ve built some more time into this one to avoid last minute rushes as they had with dreadball 😉
Listen guys when BoW is on a non stop 40k rampage, we should by all means yawn and move on.
However, when they start going front page with things such as kick starter and new games like exodus, and such we need to step up. I really enjoy the heads up on new games coming down the pipe.
The perfect storm for me, is a privateer press week of some sort though I wouldn’t no how to act if this was to ever transpire.
Kick starter games…
…This is a good start 🙂
Loka has already got my support
Generally speaking PP’s pattern of relatively minor updates spread across all factions isn’t really suited to a full-on BoW week. I guess the best shot would be the Convergence of Cyriss – or the rumoured MKIII.
oh I hear ya, but would still like a waltz across the factions and strategy lists ETC…, we used to get those back when Andy started.
But I think Andy has been tainted from hanging out with Darrell too long – LOL
Having got into Warmachine in the past couple of months, I’d quite like there to be more Warmahordes content.
However, I can’t fault BoW in their wide spread of content that they post for us, after all, it’s because of BoW that I found out there were other games and not just GW’s.
It looks really nice, but I won’t likely be throwing my money in unless I can get all four factions. I’d be more interested in it as chess pieces than the modified chess game. The sculpts are nice, but finding someone who wants to play chess is hard enough, without modifying the rules on them!
The great thing with Kickstarter (especially compared to IndieGoGo) is that you can make a pledge now and help push towards the stretch goals and then withdraw your pledge before it ends if you’re unhappy. You don’t pay until the Kickstarter ends.
This isn’t a dig at you but this seems to be one of the problems Mantic and Alessio have had with this Kickstarter. A lot of people are sitting on the fence waiting for all 4 factions to unlock but without those potential pledges, it’s going to be a hard slog to get to that point.
I’m confident we’ll see all four factions 🙂 … I initially came on board just for a cool chess set but looking at the alternative rules, they sound pretty cool – will def give them a try!
So… its just a reinterpretation of Chess. What’s next? Go? Checkers? No thanks.
@fatherknowsbreasts Some of us collect chess sets I have one handed down to me from my Dad which was hand made in Greece back in the 1960’s which is without doubt one of my center pieces. It was appraised for 2800 bucks back in 1980. It was created by a stone worker family so only so many were made each year til they quit producing them. Materials included; semi precious stones like tiger eye granite, malachite, frosted marble, brass and troy silver. Some of which have been mined out and no longer in production. Granted this set is not like… Read more »

Just pledged! Can’t wait to get my sets!
