Jake Thornton Talks New Troops in DKH: Ancient Grudge
December 8, 2011 by brennon
So with the knowledge that all the existing races trying to take over the Dwarf Holds are getting some new troops to help them do so, just what are they and why was it so important to include them? Check out another Mantic Blog video with Jake Thornton above, and some of the rules below...
New Troops – Wraith 9 points
Movement 4 Dice 2 Armour 5
Special Rules Walk through Walls.
The Wraith’s Walk Through Walls ability literally allows them to walk through “no-man’s land” – the empty space between tiles. It is dependent on whether the Wraith gets distracted, but this could lead to a lot of nasty rear attacks.
New Large Monsters – Werewolf 16 Points
Movement 8 Dice 5 Armour 3
Special Rules Large, Tough, Slam, Living
Large monsters are very powerful and the Werewolf is the fastest piece in the game! They do find it hard to move through tight corridors and to turn around, though they make up for it by being able to take more damage!
New Special Characters – Frother 12 Points
Movement 5 Dice 4 Armour 4
Special Rules Green Rage, Berserk
Frother is an Orc special character and one we’re particularly looking forward to converting – he’s got the Berserk rule, which allows him to spend any kind of token as if it was a follow-on action, provided he uses it to keep fighting!
I love these taster choices, but can't wait to see what the Bogie acts like in the game.
Already thought of some good conversion ideas for Werewolves and Frother?

Be interesting to see how well the game scales…it’s almost becoming a little wargame in its own right.
Hopefully Jake won’t mind me commenting, but it scales very well and I personally like what I have seen of it. I’ve games tested a fair bit of it thus far and I’m really excited to see what DKH fans make of it because I personally really like it.
Good to hear. DKH is a bit slow in making its way onto Canadian shelves, so I’ve just been keeping an interested eye on the project. I do, however, think it’s time that I try to get my hands on a copy.
Can grab the bundle from the Mantic website possibly still. Not sure.
Problem @brennon is when I order direct from Mantic I get hit with huge tariffs + taxes once my order crosses the border. It was something like 25% total last time i ordered. My LGS goes through a U.S. distributor for Mantic stuff and he sells on-par with the U.S. dollar. When you add my membership discount on top of that it makes much more sense for me to buy through my LGS. Only problem is that his distributor needs to have it in stock. My LGS sells lots of “premium” board games, so I’ll be talking to him over… Read more »
Hopefully, 2-3 years down the line, a big set will come out, with some plastic stuff like tables etc, doorways, like good ‘ol Heroquest. With some uniquely made models. Maybe even in resin :p
In one of the videos Jake says that if they would have let him make the game he wanted it would have cost 300gbp. Either way, its interesting to watch this game develop and grow…lots of great potential here.
