Gotta Love Them Green Skins
February 23, 2011 by dracs
All over the world Fantasy players are getting excited as the release of the new army book for the Orcs and Goblins draws near and we at Beasts of War are no exception. The last few days have consisted of Darrell and I drooling over our keyboards at pictures of the new releases, begging Lloyd to let us unbox the new Arachnarok and debating over which are more awesome... Night Goblins or Forest Goblins (go on you tree loving lil' greenies).
Now with so much up for pre-order I thought I'd take some time to talk about what I'm looking forward to in the new release.
First of all, and I cannot stress this strongly enough, Savage Orcs Rule! How do you make an Orc more orcy?
Well... how about giving him Frenzy... then cover him in tribal tattoos!
The Savage orcs have long been neglected by GW and I am glad that the new plastic sprues are finally rectifying this sad deficit.
Also, with the release of the massive Forest Goblin Arachnarok, you now have the perfect chance to create thoroughly wild themed Orcs and Goblins army. With Savage Orcs and Savage Orc Boar Boyz providing the muscle, and Spider Riders attacking the enemy's flanks, you have the opportunity to make what could be a very fun army.
One release has got me excited above all the others... Wurzag's back!
Welcome back Wurzag, your savage Orc shamanism was sorely missed, but now you are reincarnated as a pretty sweet new model too.
Then we move onto the army book itself. Warren has told me to tell you all that Orcs and Goblins have got hard! (He was pestering me for five minutes to get that line into the article.) That's right, the Orcs and Goblins army book now up for pre-order is hard back. This may account for its fairly steep price of £22.50. Who else remembers the good old days when they were £12?
Damn you inflation!
However, from the images available of the book on the GW website, it would appear that we may be getting alot more than simply a set of hard covers. The army book looks to be noticeably thicker than the previous releases, and I've got my fingers crossed for a lot more fluff.
All in all I cannot wait to get my little hands on the rulebook. Though I may have to fight Warren and Darrell for it. Place your bets folks!
What are your opinions on the new releases? Is there anything in particular which you would like to see in the new army book? Or do you think that GW should have payed more attention to one of the other armies? Drop your comments in below and let us know.
BoW Sam
The greenskin line of fantasy are getting a bit cartoon~ish for me.
Still, the new savage orcs aren’t too bad…even growing on me.
Looks like my skaven are getting new friends ;D
The new Army book looks amazing and will be much more durable. Not convinced that Orcs and Goblins should have been next but we cant change that and they are a poular force. Maybe the option of a cheaper paperback alongside the hardback would have been nice, like privateer press offer.
nice miniatures but I would love to see more savage creatures than boars and spiders…
Reminds me of the good old days where GW was all about bright intence colours and characteristic cheesey smiles. You look at the shops’ displays now and it’s all so gray and brown.
Personally i think that the hardback book is a good idea released at the wrong time. Yes its a nice thing to have a pretty full cover hard back army book, but not a nice thing to raise the price to pay for it in a recession. Here’s hoping that they do a downgraded alternative, for us cheapo’s.
New book is packed with stuff got my first hands on look the other day. As for the Giant spider the stats are rediculas oh and by the way you can use them as shaman mounts!! These things also add to the channeling chance of nearby shammys and have a rock lobber type weapon that can be fired on the move this combined with its 8 wounds and toughness of 6 makes these things very formidable. The new savage Orc boar boys look great to unfortunatly all of the boars look like Alf (oldie reference) all in all these minatures… Read more »
i really like the look of these but the costs just to high for me thats greedy gw for you
£12! I remember when they were a tenner a time! Comparing equivalent books from Wizards of the Coast a 220 page full colour hard back comes in at £18. The Orcs and Goblins book will have half the page count and adds another £4 to the price. When the Vampire counts book comes out I’ll buy it, but I’d think twice about getting the Tomb Kings book as well – which is a ruddy shame as ten years ago I happily bought all the army books. Now, with vastly more income I won’t. If I’m thinking twice, with a decent… Read more »
Love the new models, especially since I am just starting orcs and goblins. I probably use the wurzag model for a savage orc shaman just because it looks cool.
Ouch. When I first started 40k a codex was about 6 or 8 quid. I can’t help but be cynical over this and think that someone in the accounts department has gone “hey look Privateer press sell hardbacks for more than we sell our books.” difference is PP books are proof read and don’t need 2 to 3 A4 pages of corrections that we have to wait 3-4 months for. If I remember rightly GW has been losing money on printed media, I.E. Books, White dwarf’s falling sales and packaging for a while , so their strategy, instead of making… Read more »
I love orcs, but have been buying them from other companies; GW is too pricey for me now. Can’t wait for Mantic to get their orcs out!
However, Arachnarok just looks darn fun to paint and assemble. I may have to fork over some extra bucks for the big spider 🙂
Don’t want to do the usual 4 page whine about prices but come on guys – £22.50 for a book! Had it been the usual £15 I would have DEFINITELY ran out the house and gone all the way up town on the day of its release just to buy it. See what you are missing GW. Instead you’re going to have to wait until I’m feeling considerably more rich. Also repackaging units of orcs into boxes of 10 and then pricing them up at £18 is just naughty. All this does is encourage me to look elsewhere for them.… Read more »
I remember £12 a book, wasn’t all that long ago. Then they were £15 for a long time, then, ta da £17.50.. no, hang on £22.50!!
Yeah, lucky me.
Look, bigger book, hurrah, but extra fluff doesn’t actually help me play the game so I’m happy not to pay for extra fluff in this economic climate.
I’ve just got a new job, but frankly, with my son and wife to look after I probably can’t afford to indulge too much in £22.50 books and £36 spiders unfortunately, even though I’d like to (and yes, I know they can be had cheaper).
@urgok what orcs do you use instead of the GW ones?
The book is expensive as the forgeworld books and I dont undestand why so expensive since the focus is to sell miniatures.
Is there any pic of the huge spider in the sprue? I would love to put her in different poses
i agree with the fact there should be a soft back book, hard back is ok like, but it just gives GW the excuse to up the prices even more. since i collect all the fantasy armys i spend alot buying all these new army books, and now i have one random hard back book. its going to seem out of place. but wurzak makes every thing better i guess. and i can now finaly have a nice forest goblin force, yay
Sadly for me the prices are a tad steep. Eating and heating come first Then there are other games and hobbies to attend to. Ain’t it a bloomin shame *violins* lol The spidey is quite nice but is it a bit overpowered? Would look great flanked by units of Spider Riders! The book looks more durable and great if you want pretty pics. Personally I could settle for the stats and fewer whistles and bells for the game but I can see it will have an appeal. But at that sort of cost seeing how the kids treat books I… Read more »
Hardback book is really nice. I always thought the old paperback army books were overly prone to wear. Price is, or course, a little steep. I’d rather spend that kind of money on plastic shaped like soldiers.
Options would be good (yeah, some chance I know).
An all colour extended fluff and reference hard back and a cheap (and I mean cheap GW not just less expensive) soft-back B&W option with little more than the core rules in.
have to say, on a more positive note, that Arachnarok has to be one of GW”s best miniatures. Absolutely superb.
The price is a bit of a joke for the hardback, and has anyone seen the price of the new Boyz? £18 for 10. Rip off.
Having said that, I’m still going to scrimp and scrape to get myself an army built up. They’re just too cool.
interestingly i did a bit of comparison and it turns out the page-count for the O&G book is pretty much exactly average for recent books for both fantasy and 40k, so it doesn’t appear to contain significantly more stuff, it’s just all in colour.
they look good was hopeing they would new leader warboss types.
£18 quid for 10 orcs? LOL!
almost all of the comments here repeat GWs insane prices but thought i would add my name to the tally.
Attn GW: I would like to play warhammer fantasy as well as other games GW produces. BUT i will wait till someone out there discounts the bajesus out of your models and books cause they are too expensive.
GW products are expensive but they have an annoying ability to make you really want them, the Arachnarok is a prime example. Im thinking I might get a few GW bits and pieces as they are undeniabley gorgeous but Ill wait and see what mantic come up with first before investing.
