Last time when I looked at the various iPhone apps which are available for us hobbyists I discussed the two of what I call supplementary apps, namely apps which are aimed for use alongside a physical game.

But for those of you who can't bare to part with your beloved games even when travelling then be not afraid for there are apps available which are games in their own right and here are just two of them.

First up we have the app game of Elder Sign: Omens by Fantasy Flight Games.

Fantasy Flight Games are quickly cementing themselves at the forefront of this new medium of hobby gaming, with Elder Sign: Omens being in my opinion one of the best such games available at the moment.

The game sees you control a team of four investigators, exploring the different locations which appear around the museum in order to prevent the immurgence of Azathoth.

The plays out in the same manner as the Elder Sign dice game, with marks being randomly generated turn to use in solving a room's mysteries or combatting any mosters you come across.

The game is great to play through, with animations at start and end, and comprehensive voiced videos to help you get to grips with the rules. However, while these walkthrough videos are useful I found that the best way to get to grips with the game is to play through it a coule of times.

Another great game available in this medium are the electronic Fighting Fantasy books.

I used to love these books, so I was quick to download one (City of Thieves) when I found a couple of them available on iTunes.

The games remain equally as fun as their paper format, but now the app makes life a lot easier, keeping track of stat changes and generating random dice rolls.

The game also has some really nice pieces of artwork littered throughout, which are initially presented in full colour, really bringing to life the adventure as you play through it.

The only problem I have with this is that I've had it for months and I still haven't been able to finish it. Dratted vampire is a real pain in the neck.

All in all these are two really good games that are the perfect time wasters when you want to game while killing time. It is really incouraging to see the way these games are evolving to meet modern advances in technology and I cannot wait to see what else might be coming out soon.
