The Empire Will Burn As Chaos Descends From The North!
January 29, 2013 by brennon
The last weekend of the month brings with it White Dwarf from Games Workshop and also plenty of new releases. Warriors of Chaos are getting their new edition update for Warhammer Fantasy which involves a new rulebook and plenty of fancy models...
Of course a new edition means a new book and Warriors of Chaos have their fancy, full colour tome to enjoy. The cover artwork is looking amazing and if it's anything like its Sci-Fi brother it will be a fantastic read too. Here's hoping plenty of fluff has been combined with great rules to make an army worth playing on the tabletop.
A great place to start would probably be with the leaders of these Northmen. First up is the new look multi-part plastic Chaos Lord with the new and seemingly mandatory scenic base. I like the commanding pose and he doesn't look overly fancy.
A calm commanding air hangs about the sculpt and reminds me of the Chaos Lord from the cinematic for Warhammer: Age of Reckoning.
Next up we have Vilitch the Curseling, a Champion of Tzeentch as can be seem from the detail on his armour. His fluff sounds pretty fascinating with him being a meld of both mind and soul with his sibling.
Last but certainly not least is the mighty Throgg, the Troll King. I saw this miniature a while ago when the White Dwarf images leaked onto the internet and I was stunned both then and now. It really is a great looking miniature and immediately makes me want to start playing this army!
Next up we have the new Chaos Warrior Chariot, the Forsaken and (finally!) new Dragon Ogres which look pretty huge. To start it's always nice to have another plastic kit for a Chariot. The amount of times my metal ones have fallen apart and been hell to stick back together is beyond count.
Each of these three kits are once again multi-part plastic and it will be fun to see the amount of customisation you can add through the use of Bitz Boxes and such. I would love to see a unit of Dragon Ogres each with allegiances to the different Gods.
It's nice to see the Forsaken are in line with the standard Chaos Warriors too. It means that despite the hideous mutations and flailing limbs you will have something that ties all of the units together.
You also can't have a new released without something massive and that's exactly what this duo-kit is. Above you can see the miniatures for both the Slaughterbrute and Mutalith Vortex Beast. I will reserve judgement on these until I see them in the flesh, but as a first impression these are fairly neat looking Chaos Beasts.
My only problem with big monsters like this is that they are very easy artillery fodder. The amount of times I have bought down other armies large giants and such with cannons immediately puts me off when I look to adding big guys to my own force.
Of course we haven't seen the rules for these yet but I can imagine they do something hideously effective!
I know that a lot of the time there is a hate directed towards Games Workshop but honestly when looking at these models I don't see any of them that I wouldn't be proud to own.
Now, bring me my Throgg and let's start a Chaos Troll army!
Let me know your thoughts on this latest Chaos Warrior release below.

I like the Chaos lord and the beasties…
It’s been a while since Chaos has had any appeal to me.
Quite frankly, I’ve been impressed with the string of GW plastics ever since the Vampire Counts were re-done.
They were falling behind, exacting high price for low-quality plastics in ever smaller nummbers per box, and Finecast has been pretty much a joke so far… But they’ve really upped their game in the latest boxes.
I still prefer other brands, and the price is still high, but at least you’re getting quality, most of the time.
I think they look kind of…crappy? All of them?
I’m not a fan of the 8th edition aesthetics in general, though.
Oh, it’s a certain style… IMHO, better than what was there before.
Of course, you’ve got to see past the paint-job on some of those.
I personally will not even glance at the new book, all there will be in it are nerfs and tinted color pages, and who better to protect your opponent’s army from the one you’re playing than the lord of crudd himself.
By ‘nerf’ I assume you mean ‘changes’? Good grief. The game changes. Adapt. Play better.
The latest Warhammer armies books have been very good indeed – my only gripe is that they’re too expensive for me to collect them.
Please don’t describe people’s work as ‘crudd’. It’s just unpleasant. If you’re annoyed you won’t be getting an auto win button then, well, grow up. Personally I really rather like these new models and the push toward a balanced game with more theme and drama than simply as a way to win by taking a certain unit.
By nerf I meant the effect robin cruddace has on anything that isn’t imperial guard, I don’t mind them getting a more balanced codex as much as I mind the idea of everything that made WoC fluffy phil kelly army that you could build any way you want, while also being able to enjoy the competitive aspect of the game being turned into a rigid, uninspired, and inflexible series of lists that require you to buy the newest 82$ piece of plastic because everything else costs too many points for its worth. And if you didn’t realize yet I was… Read more »
Foot on rock alert!
Not keen on the monster things
Look like they are having a blast at a thrash metal concert giving it the devil sign and the tongue thing. KEEERANNG!!
Just too much going on. Meant to be chaotic for sure but not calamari soup.
Although the chariot has the horn too much for my tastes (tusks are the new skullz) do like the sense of movement achieved with the chariot.
I do like the look of the forsaken, and of the Cthulu thing/Vortex beast, but the rest? I dont know what it is, but they dont really look evil, more herp derp am a chaos wurriur
That was always the case, quite frankly… 😉
I like the idea of better warriors of chaos but I refuse point blank to by Failcast. It really is a wrong turn done not to produce better figues but a larger profit margin and sorry but they still feel somehow unimaginative. Chaos should somehow be a little more..umm.. chaotic?
Great release I think. Don’t like the forsaken. I’d probably switch the chaos lord’s head but other than that not much to complain about. The dragon ogres, slaughterbeast and mutalith vortex beast are all nice and Throgg is absolutely awesome, think I’ll get him even though I’m not doing WoC.
Forsaken, 10 minis that dont even look good for 30 pounds .. Not going into the rest of the prices, its getting giganormously out of hand. Would be interested in these otherwise (except the forsaken)
That’s their standard pricing model I believe. The top elite infantry slot kicks in at £3 per model. Same with most of the other armies 🙁 At least those Forsaken have a bit more plastic than the others…
I like the ranges but the Slaughterbeast pose is a little strange for me, it think its the hand he’s got up in the air with his fingers spread out…puts me in the mind of Paul Hogan in the Crocodile Dundee movies putting the cow in the middle of the road asleep. Same pose 🙂

The best are Throgg, the 2 beasts and the chariot.
I want give a big sigh of relief as the chaos chariot was becoming sort of a joke as it looked older than most gamers at the local GW store. For the love of God it had the old hunch back chaos warriors still driving it around! If this was the only release I would be happy. The rest is icing on the cake IMHO.
Throgg =£36!! but have to agree, he is very nice. If you are rich enough to buy one, will you get me one to please? 😀
I just looked at the prices as well. Man it looks like everything has jumped up rather high. Wallet going back into pocket. Sad face 🙁
Personnally like all the models tbh. I then went onto GW website and POW. I am just hoping that the guy who produced the Dark Angel book was let loose with the price gun!! someone give him his P45!! and lable up correctly please, hehe
£30 for a 96 page book (none Vat too)
£50 for the brute
£25 for the chariot. (increase to the normal £18 for other races).
Have to say that I feel totally gutted that my chaos army will only be made up of my old Battalion boxes with some marauder horsemen.
Yes, it’s horrid… And the most expensive is of course the one I prefer, the big beastie with daring lovecraftian style…
But it’s GW. If you’re not used to it by now, you simply stop playing their games (as I did).
At least, as I said, it’s new models of a better quality than they used to, and some of them are even somewhat original. From this company, I call it a success…
Admittedly, my expectations were low.
I have hatred for the cartooony cheesy look a lot of models have.
Another fail from GW, (their fail excludes the single-models which tend to be good)
The Dragon Ogres are excellent, mainly because they are not cartoon BS and have been toned down. Chariot is pretty standard, fair enough.
To quote Darrel all shades of average, and in some case thats being generous.
Uninspired release, really not to my taste.
Would of been book and cards for me, but after Dark Angels book can wait.
Dragon Ogres and those big beasties are best of the bunch but other those most of these are not so great looking.
I already have 3-4k of WoC, just hope the new book doesn’t mess with my lists to much.
Models: underwhelming
Pricing: overwhelming
Frankly, I think mutalith vortexbeast is the only one that looks interesting enough. The lord is just boring, Vilitch is terrible and I the units look static and ugly. Throgg looks good, but I always imagined him to look more… royal. Like, a proper old school fantasy troll king whose picture from storybook scared you as a child. This model looks like a kings right hand or bodyguard.
I like the models, not so keen on the price. Might pick up a figure or two to paint in the future but this release hasn’t been enough to tempt me into starting an army.
£36 for one miniature (Throgg) is beyond disgusting. FU GW.
They look fantastic! I love everyone of them, except the Forsaken. I get more (and maybe even better looking) Forsaken if I just buy a box of Marauders or Warriors and convert them up a bit. I have the same problem with Throgg. I like the model a lot, but you can get 3 River Trolls and use one of them as Throgg (converted, ofcourse). You would also get 2 Chaos Trolls with that. Overall, pricing is just awful, but the models are stunning. We will see whom I get. 🙂
Models are not worth the ticket price. End of story.
Throgg is a lovely model. Still prefer my old dragon ogres. May buy throgg even though i won’t use him. The forsaken are awful. They look like the first multi part plastic chaos warriors from the late nineties
Overpriced
Throgg and the Dragon Ogres are nice, but the rest is just ‘meh’
Prices are getting stupid though. I’s pricing me out pretty much.
I built a Ogre army and I think thats about it. I would love to use the dragon ogres in my OK army but it aint going to happen.
Another victory for the smaller gaming companies as GW shoots itself in the foot again with its pricing policy.
If they really want to put people off their games then they are going the right way about it.
I’m glad trogg (if that’s his name carnt quite remember) has finally got a model however I find it unsettling that there no plastic chaos troll snaps yet to imply a chaos troll army is possible. I agree with the other guys with the models not looking very chaosy and think its because the models proportions went quite correct look at the horns on the guy on the chariot they maybe off a mammoth or whatever but still it looks kidy and child like. Same with the beasties I think what’s happened is some concept artist has done a great… Read more »
