A Dark Elf Invasion Has Been Spotted At Raging Heroes
February 1, 2013 by brennon
Raging Heroes are taking their Dark Elf love to Kickstarter and you will soon be able to lead an entire army into battle complete with Archers, Spearmen, Dark Riders and even Pegasus!
The concept art is looking fairly superb and if the quality of their other kits is anything to go by we could be looking forwards to some fantastic models. I particularly like this rider pictured here with the strangely ethereal horse and its typically spiky and scantily clad warrior.
According to the Q&A which you can read by clicking the link there will be many different options available so let's look forwards to a new Kickstarter coming soon!
What do you think?

For some reason I’m not that keen on this army or any of the armies they speak of releasing. I tend to support unique releases. GW armies are made rather well and all this is is swap gender fill in the unit. If they where making a game of ther own development I would support them 100%!
As of what I see this is just same old stuff that every other company does. Try hard to copy GW units with a new twist so they can target a big audience.
To be fair Drow existed in D&D before GW made an army of them
Wizards of the Coast (?) released a Drow extension late last year. Which gives them a slightly higher profile.
The problem for any company is if you have a non-regular race with no rules, who will buy it without a game to go with it. Not sure if RH has a set of rules?
I understand your PoV though.
You bring something true to the table. I’m bashing them a little too much for something that started from another company, not even GW. Hope they hit the goals and release what seems like what many want. As for me, I still don’t like the army ideas.
I can understand the lack of interest with the army choices. But It is a bit like scale aircraft model companies People groan at another Spitfire or Bf109. But they sell and if good enough will provide a return on investment. As the company grows it can move past the P-51s and Fw190s to more unusual types. Some do specialise in esoteric subjects but they have lower volumes. It is hard to think of a new fantasy army, but maybe something like Kobolds or those fishlike dudes from D&D whose name I forget Opening up mythologies and folklores from around… Read more »
I love raging heros, doing interesting things with the fantasy lines. Doing GW lines with a twist is the only way to make money for a small to medium company, while I want them to bring out their own game I’m just glad they are making their models.
> Doing GW lines with a twist is the only way to make money for a small to medium company
Like Corvus Belli did, or Privateer, yes? Oh wait, no, they went big because they had an original idea that managed to catch on, instead of leeching off existing game’s market.
You are not really comparing like for like though.
privateer and Corvus Belli created a universe and ruleset to use the figures in.
That may not be RH’s intention.
Am I? I don’t care what’s RH’s intention is, the simple, observable fact is, it IS possible for small to medium company to be successful without being a parasite on GW’s designs.
How is the above graphic being parasitic on GW’s designs. You are putting the cart before the horse. Drow or Dark Elves ARE NOT GW’s concept, idea. IP or anything else. Any claim otherwise is deluded and lacking in knowledge of gaming history and mythology. GW do NOT own all rights to ALL fantasy gaming motifs and mythological creatures. Dwarves, Elves, Dark Elves et al pre exist GW. So, if a smaller company wishes to sculpt a set of Dark Elf figures, so be it. Good luck to them. They will be a damn sight better and cheaper than the… Read more »
Poks you are indeed not comparing like with like. RH, unlike PP etc are not trying to create an all new unique gaming system and probably don’t even have the capital to do so. If you *are* going to be making a new game system with “unique” models (PP’s warmachines look suspiciously like a lot of GW epic stuff note) you’re gonna need some capital behind you, and a lot of these mini companies are basically a few guys in a room who know how to make resin – hardly the kind of people with the kind of capital to… Read more »
It is the way to start up, gain a following, while developing a series of lines and even their own rules set. Given the current economic status with unknown start ups finding it hard to get some investment. Look at the way Mantic started they had to make a series of models as replacement for fantasy games.
I have to say here I have a unit of female elves from the fantasy range. I was not expecting it but these are metal and the quality surpassed GW’s efforts by a considerable margin. The only real reason to stick with GW only is if you are an ‘inhouse and or tournament’ gamer. If not they make a very satisfying addition to any gamers collection. Does a minature producer really have to have a rule set? Why? And unless GW managed to copyright all the races that existed before they started producing then its fair game. No? Also consider… Read more »
I feel somewhat bad as I didn’t have the intention of starting such a heated topic that with so many people would continue on in this spot. The more I look at it, the dark elves army is really open to anyone. Even the female guard army could be considered up in the air if they name them right. The only army the is in my view hard to wiggle out of coping is the sisters of battle they plan.
Yeah It’s all your fault Manpug!! 😛
Don’t feel bad it is all due to Poks and in no way anything to do with my big gob. lol
Chibi- I think you mistake two things. The Idea of a dark elf is indeed not GW’s. However the spiky, zig-zaggy looks are GW’s style. Drows from D&D, tho also bit bondagy, are less fetishy in this regard. It’s not that RH’s doing dark elves, it’s that they’re doing Dark elves GW style, not their own style, because GW-style will sell while their own style might not.
The dilemma if there is one is that the model needs to be recognised as a certain race. So it is understandable that some design characteristics will be reused. Dwarves and beards, Goblins and pointy noses, Vampires as camp pointy toothed chaps with a cape. The Avatars of War Dark Elf has spiky armour too. However, I will agree that Dark Elf need not be so spiky bondage. There is always a chance that a different style will not sell, but if it looks cool then it should not be a problem. Personally if it were my project I would… Read more »
