CoolMiniOrNot Prepare For Wrath Of Kings Kickstarter
July 22, 2013 by brennon
CoolMiniOrNot are looking to bring you another blockbuster Kickstarter this summer and this time it's focused on Wrath of Kings. You can check out the trailer for it above...
It looks like we're going to get some good miniatures out of this and hopefully a nice game to boot. I do wonder if we're being somewhat swamped by these massive Kickstarters at the moment though. There are a lot of smaller companies that don't seem to get a look in when these big shots rolling around in the fundraising cash pile.
Will you be keeping an eye out for this one?

A lot of the art work has a Confrontation feel to it and I like it.
Yeah very Rackham-like.
The main isue to me is that CMoN is overusing KS. They are using it while they could (and would) oubviously launch the product anyway. It is a bit sad because the KS platform is starting to be flooded with projetcs which des not really need it, and so those which need it are left behind these huge cash machine…
That’s a misconception, Ben. The big KSer’s have massively increased the pot for everyone. Check out the numbers that small-company minis Ksers were doing prior to last summer then compare them to now. The bigger companies get the biggest slice of the pie, but they’ve made the pie much much bigger.
I can understand the view that with bigger companies making it a viable format for smaller ones they are benefiting, but if you think about the massive funding targets that the big Kickstarters are looking for there won’t be enough money in gamers pockets to pour into the smaller ones from proper start-up companies.
But they are benefitting, the numbers don’t lie. A little over a year ago, a small company KSer for minis would raise several thousand dollars. Remember how amazing it was when Dark Potential blew all the previous minis KSers out of the water? Well small company KSers like Arena Rex, WarGods, Darklands, Raging Heroes, Judge Dredd, By Fire & Sword, Blackwater Gulch, and Kensei now raise significant five and six figure sums as a matter of course. Really small company KSers like Bombshell Babes, Meridian, and Dreamscarred, are now pulling in much more than their equivalents did a little over… Read more »
You probably are right on this, you’ve convinced me lol.
I do understand how it can seem a logical conclusion to come to. Much as I understand why people think KS takes sales from LGS, even though it doesn’t. I’m passionate about defending crowdfunding on these points becase it has so much potential to do good things for our industry that it’s a dangerous path to criticise it for faults it doesn’t have. Which is not to say it has no faults, they’re just different ones.
And here is one of those geniune issues KS has, failure to bring a project to completion – http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/forkingpath/the-doom-that-came-to-atlantic-city/posts/548030
As investors there’s a real risk, whether through bad management or outright fraud, that a KS you back will not bring the product to fruition and you might not see anything for your money.
Looks good, but my only question for CoolMiniOrNot is, why not a Confrontation Kickstarter? They have the rights and if you have the rights to something with as much built in fan base as Confrontation and access to some of the best miniatures ever produced, what is the hold up? If done well, CMON could not only have a super successful KS, they could do a major relaunch of Confrontation with sales for a long time afterward.
No chance, I’ve already been bitten buy their KS’, if they say you will get the product in 6 months, read that as 12 months and it’ll be closer.
Of course, if BoW don’t like the big boys use of KS, then don’t publicize it, give the true start-ups a go in the spotlight instead.
My thinking is that I report on most of the KS content that I see and let people decide for themselves. I might have my opinion on bigger KS projects but no sense in not letting those who might be interested take a look at the news on updates and such.
I try and get a mix of bigger companies and smaller ones on the news stream and think I strike a pretty good balance.
While I agree that Kickstarter is increasingly being used by companies in a manner that seems contrary to it’s original purpose, I can’t blame companies like CMoN for using it as a means to mitigate the risk of developing a new project by getting some cash up front. From a business point of view that’s certainly smarter than funding your own project and taking the losses on your chin when the product is delayed by six months or fails to sell as well as you had hoped. For me, the problem is a matter of perceived value and how the… Read more »
There’s no need for an answer as the problem doesn’t exist. KS has always been a fundraising tool for creativity at any point in the process up to and including the point where a product is ready for production. If it wasn’t then KS wouldn’t be approving these campaigns. Throw in the fact that the large KSers have dramatically expanded the market for everyone (see above) then there is no issue. Large companies have always been capable of outpricing small ones in any market. Look at Amazon and your local bookstore, or Asda and your local grocery store. This is… Read more »
Hey, don’t get me wrong, I’m with you here. I loves me my small indie kickstarters and I loves me my big stretch-goals-up-the-wazoo kickstarters and I’m perfectly happy for them to both use KS as a platform to get funding. My wallet, however, does not like Kickstarter AT ALL 😀
Likewise 🙂
I can’t stand the CmON people in general. David Doust is one of the owners and he owned New Wave miniatures way back in the day. That company was essentially a scam, he was literally taking payment from thousands of consumers and really only shipping to perhaps hundreds of consumers. Over the years I have encountered dozens and dozens of people who were ripped off by that company. He also has done an epically poor job running Dark Age. The new guys that he partnered with at CmON are just quick buck money grubbers. I don’t think anything they’ve made… Read more »
Nice artwork and models. Probably a couple of sculpts from former Rackham talented sculptors. Alas I’m snowed under with games and have been fed up by my last year’s pledges^^. Maybe KS have made the pie bigger but I believe It will, one day, downsize back to “normal” proportions. Actually I’m still waiting for my Relic Knighs’ stuff from CmoN and I will certainly not pledge on this one. I wish CMoN made less KS campaigns and focussed on delivering what they kickstarted on time. I don’t feel very confident in a compagny that starts so much projects before having… Read more »
CmONm has a lot of kickstarters going, they seem to start a new one every 3 months or so. No wonder they have a hard time delivering on projects. They will probably start this one in september if their previous record is any indication.
CMoN run KSer campaigns for other companies. The delivering of product is only partially their responsibility and aspects such as concepting, scupting, design work, and rules writing have nothing to do with them.
thanks, I didnt know this
