A Closer Look At Upcoming Warhammer Dwarfs
January 29, 2014 by brennon
Some more images of the upcoming Dwarfs have arrived on the internet via 40k Warzone and of course Bugman' Brewery, the defiant hold of the Dawi on the internet. See what you think of the Longbeards and a close up of Belegar...
As you can see above we have a much better look at the Longbeard variant kit that will be coming out soon. The Hammerers were looking pretty awesome but the Longbeards have made my jaw drop a little. They remind me a lot of the old Adrian Smith artwork that I love so much.
They all look very dour and grim and perfect for the older members of the Dwarf hold. When they are set against the other Dwarfs in the range the rest rather vanish into insignificance.
And above you can see the close up of Belegar where you can see that the icon behind his head clearly is part of the back of the model. As much as that is a relief, I will be chopping that off as soon as possible I reckon. Never been a fan of those thing of things, even in fantasy warfare.
It's looking fairly awesome for the Dwarfs to be honest and despite the rather disappointing Slayer hopefully we have lots to look forward to as the month marches on.
What do you think?

I think GW would do themselves a huge favor by just making images available as part of a media kit every new release instead of letting the world judge them through the lens of a smart phone taking pictures of pictures under what is most likely fluorescent overhead lighting. All they’re accomplishing by “protecting their intellectual property” is helping others make their product look bad. It’s so backwards it’s practically Victorian. Have they never heard of product promotion or marketing? Aside from that, yeah, they look like dwarves. Probably pretty good. Good enough to regain some of that lost market… Read more »
Pictures will be available on their website on Saturday. Why do people have such a hard time understanding that these are leaked pictures? GW will, like every other company on the planet, release pictures of their product at the time of their choosing and through the channels they choose to release them through.
As for the models. Yep they’re dwarfs. Not interested. I’m sure some people will love them though.
You never get a second chance to make a first impression. For people not already inclined to buy them, GW need to try and sell them as much as they can on first viewing.
Given that this leak seems to be a photo of the new White Dwarf, the only way to prevent this would be to release photos before WD’s release date. GW don’t want to do this because they say it hurts sales. I’ve no idea why, but then I’m not an armchair CEO.
The switch to weekly WD’s is a step in the right direction as it compresses the timescale for leaks to closer to release date, but this has shown right from the off that it doesn’t solve the problem. All they have to do now is send an email with a few teaser photos a week or so before the WD release and they get to control the message. This way they give up that control. GW have been notorious for their inability to adapt to the internet age. They’re only just addressing the problems caused by a monthly release schedule… Read more »
@redben I’m totally with you. I think everything you have said is a great idea. GW however do not. I don’t understand why but I don’t go around assuming that the CEOs of large companies are idiots who don’t know what they’re doing. On the contrary, I assume that they have very good reasons to make the decisions that they so. We might not like the decisions they make, but we also don’t have access to the kind of information which would enable us to really evaluate them. Hence my quip about armchair CEOs. We can all say what we’d… Read more »
The wargaming industry is a small world, even for a business the size of GW. I’m not speculating.
“Why do people have such a hard time understanding that these are leaked pictures?” We understand that fully. No one missed that point. The point we’re making is that GW is allowing leaks to consistently beat their own marketing to the audience. It’s shoddy, sloppy and damn amateurish. If they had any promotional sense at all, they’d release official pictures before publishing White Dwarf. What are they protecting? Nothing. It’s senseless. “GW will, like every other company on the planet, release pictures of their product at the time of their choosing and through the channels they choose to release them… Read more »
I can’t argue with that. You’re right. I’m convinced.
Well, the plastics are probably quite good… that’s GW for you. Still, no knees. And there’s better (less tacky) dwarves out there.
Scibor and Avatars of War, just to name two. Both of those companies have their drawbacks (price and administrative blundering respectively) but in the end they both sell a better product… and are good corporate citizens.
The models in the top photo look the pick of the bunch, helped by an unusually good studio paintjob, but there’s nothing there to make me switch my dwarfs from AoW and Scibor.
Yeah I agree that the ones on the top dodo actually look very impressive. I think the problem with GW releases is that no matter how good they are, they look like a group of clones rather than individuals. I don’t think they will compare with FW chaos dwarves at any rate.
Although their plastics are market-leading, plastic still hasn’t caught up to metal or resin for mini quality. As a result GW are always going to struggle to match the quality of smaller companies who produce in metal and resin, and where FW offer an alternative, the FW mini is always likely to be superior.
Daaaaaamn, they are some lovely Dwarf minis! If they weren’t priced so stupidly I’d definitely pick ’em up! Not sure how these models qualify as being tacky though?
I personally prefer a few of the scibor models overall but there’s no way these are any worse than AoW or Scibor’s if you’re wanting them in quantities enough to qualify for an army. Not that I care either way, I picked up some steam punk Dwarfs via a Titan Forge kickstarter recently so I’m sorted for little stumpy men!
I doubt these will paint up as nicely s scriber. Scribor are proper resin and therefore will have sharper detail. Plastic figures have a smoother look, but don’t have the same depth as resin.
Rubbish. These are not dwarfs, only the work of a deranged tinker. They look like a bunch of ridiculous ambulatory beards, each carrying it’s own helmet. Give me back the old Morrisons/Dixon figures from Marauder! Those had bodies, legs, and looked like dwarfs. Or are bodies, legs and so on bad for business? As for better figures currently available, besides those already mentioned I am currently buying the Runecast meal figures. Still few figures but then some figures they are! If people patronize the brand, the range is sure to grow faster than already planned 😉 Whiteknight also have a… Read more »
I like them – as I said in the piece above they remind me of the Adrian Smith art that I love. The Avatars of War Dwarves and many others are very nice yes, but I think those Hammerer/Longbeards are pretty ace and Belegar looks good too – will be chopping that Icon off his back though – although maybe it will do if I just give it less of a ‘bright’ paint job. Looking forward to Saturday and the new WDW with the full images and hopefully some of the rules for them too. Probably going to grab two… Read more »
my 2cents….. want some good looking dwarves, try LoTR from GW. You will also get awesome rules with it…. but good luck to find players.
I like them but then Ive always had a soft spot for the Dwarves, I haven’t looked at price yet though.
The only dwarves I like are the Middle-earth variety. They have knees.
And the battle-barrel Bombur is the most deadly of them all 🙂
I don’t like these modern fantasy dwarfs either. The dwarfs I like are the ones from mythology. They make hammers for gods and turn to stone in sunlight.
As an addict of all things Dwarfy I am drooling over these pics. Lots of people can’t see the appeal of Dwarfs. I think I like that their stature makes them appear to be underdogs.
I love the Avatars of War Dwarfs, Scibor, Confrontation… You name it. So these get my vote, especially over those snooty High Elves! (Booooo!) I love the new oversized shields! Dang, Feb feels like Christmas all over again 🙂
