Darrell investigates the Charmed Shield for Warhammer Fantasy Battles and gives us another dose of his unique wisdom.
So just how do you use these magical items to stop your opponent blasting you with cannons and other nasty stuff?

Charmed shield also work in Close Combat as far as I can see it. It is a great piece of armour for 5 points. Valuable on your BSB if he can take it.
BSB can’t take a shield or additional hand weapon, nor a great weapon or brace of pistols, etc etc. One hand has to hold the banner and the other a weapon 😀
You are wrong. There are some BSB that can take shields and additional hand weapons such as Exalted Heroes, Wight Kings, Dark Elf Masters.
Except they can’t use them in close combat. Also, Exalted Heroes can’t… Dark Elf Masters, I couldn’t say.
Wight Kings start off with them, so I’ll give ya that one 😉
Sorry, you’re just wrong.
I disagree with it being good. If it’s the first hit, as opposed to the first wound, you would simply attack with something pathetic (something with a bow, for example) to nullify the shield and then go for hefty stuff, like bolt throwers etc. Answering the original question: it’s not a save of any kind, it dicsounts the hit. So, no special rule about no Armour Saves, Flaming Attacks or re-roll Ward Saves will affect this die roll. The real question is whether the intention of the rule is actually that the shield can be used as a normal shield… Read more »
I would imagine it reverts to a regular shield after use. I think for 5 points it’s certainly an item worth considering. Chances are your gunpowder wielding opponents are going to try to cannon snipe any character in a unit, so there it would come in handy. If your character is wandering about on his own, well…
I think it is an excellent item. I use it on my chaos sorcerer, gives me a 3+ save and can use the ability to save me losing a wound from a miscast etc.
Chaos Sorcerers can’t take shields, unfortunately, which is a shame…
They can, for the love of god get your facts right.
Grow up and check through things. They aren’t allowed: they don’t have the option for shields and it was clarified via FAQ. Do some research before you start spouting your self-righteousness.
On page 500 it says that chaos sorcerers are the exception to the rule wizzards can not carry magic armour unless they have an option for mundane armour. They are an exception because they have armour as standard equipment. There is no mention that you have to have an option for the standard item before you can take the magical version. So you can take a magical spear eventhough you can not take a normal spear. Chaos wizzards can wear any kind of magical armour. No mention of having to have options before having the magical version of it. No… Read more »
paintitred: Aye, but the FAQ specifies that they cannot take shields and FAQs and errata overrule anything else…
great clarification, good work
Wow I read that wrong lol, thanks Darrell. I’ll be adding this to my list directly.
