My What Big Teeth You Have BaneBeast Blood-Maw!
June 1, 2012 by brennon
BaneLegions from Maelstrom Games is back to creating some weird and wonderful monsters for the tabletop. This time its a rather ugly and menacing looking Blood-Maw which I think you will agree is something not to bump into on a dark night...
Now what do you make of this? I like the idea and the scale of the beast but it feels like it could do with something extra, especially on the back. I would love to see some spines or bony protrusions breaking out of the skin on a larger scale than at the top of its forearms.
I suppose the upside is that you have plenty of room to make your painting shine and give it an interesting skin tone to break up the flesh.
A truly monstrous addition to the BaneBeast line-up.
What do you think of the Blood-Maw?

Althought there is plwnty of detail in that sculpt I am bothered by one thing in that. And thats were are his other senses than taste. There seems to be no eyes, no ears and no nose.
Remember Giger’s Alien – that had no eyes, ears or nose because as he said in a documentary about the making of Alien ‘…you can’t tell which way the monster is looking…it’s more scary…’ – you can’t tell how he knows you’re there, but he does know…and he’s going to kill you. I love this model – really brutal and aggressive. The fact he’s all tough body and toothy mouth just highlights the fact his sole purpose is carnage…he looks like something out of Doom 3: http://www.robotvsbadger.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/pinky_demon.jpg It’s an awesome model, but not for newbs. Painting the flesh to get… Read more »
Good point. I had forgoten about Giger’s Alien not having those either. In some decree it makes sense when considered from that perspective.
It also makes sense when you consider many deep cave dwelling species actually have no need for eyes effectively like our own. Where no light reaches, no eye can work. Remember snakes taste the air with their tongues… who’s to say the Blood Maw Vore doesn’t do the same?
@Brennon, had you actually see the miniature in the flesh, trust me you wouldn’t say it lacked detail. Here, take a look at a real review:

Honestly, I’m actually fed up of seeing supposedly monstrous, animalistic beasts wearing trousers and pieces of armour. It’s a brave and bold move by the guys at BaneLegions to run with something that isn’t an anthropomorphised version of our beasts from legends. It took guts, and Daniel Cockersell pulled it off with some aplomb. The detail on the skin is mind boggling, it truly is.
I don’t doubt the skin detailing is excellent and that’s why I pointed out that you could go to town on it with your painting. But I was hoping for some larger spines or bone protrusions coming from the back of it. Each to their own. Not everyone’s going to like every miniature 🙂

By all means have an opinion on what a miniature looks like… but saying something has a ‘lack of detail’ when you actually haven’t seen it in the flesh is just plain wrong, and more importantly bad journalism. The English language is a fairly precise tool and as such it is always preferable for those writing an article to be careful and considered in what they say. Also to be deliberate and clear. What you meant to say was that you felt the composition was lacking further additions… you then define those additions, in this case spines protruding from the… Read more »
While I agree that the figure is fine as is, I am also basing that on these pictures as seen. It makes a change not to see spines and protrusions on a nasty beastie. I have to disagree about whether it is necessary to have seen the actual figure though. It comes down to a personal preference for which the pictures are adequate to make a call on. For sure there are instances when most of us get a bit carried away and should reserve comment until seeing the model in the flesh, but to be fair I don’t see… Read more »
That wasn’t the issue. In the original article Brennon said the miniature lacked detail and was just flat flesh in effect. He was wrong, and badly so. The miniature has plenty of detail. Hence me saying he should have said he didn’t like the composition of the piece and state what he would have done differently. Pictures are more than enough to judge whether the character of a piece suits your tastes, but comments about quality and tacit statements about the physical properties of a piece can NOT be discerned by photographs alone. So therefore I stand by my criticism… Read more »
Couldn’t agree more. The beast actually looks like something that lives almost entiry underground. The concept is so simple and yet this miniature makes the old cave beast concept look like something entirely new. No small feat in this day and age… And yes, that skin detail truly is something.
Oh my, now this is a beast that I feel will ve added to my collection. I have several ideas for its use after I am done with it
I’m willing to bet that the dentist makes a killing just on one visit from this fellow 😛
Lol
I’m more willing to bet that the Maw does the killing at the dentists
Is this the MeMaw that Sheldon was talking about when he was playing Will Wheaton?
If that’s Sheldon’s MeMaw then no wonder he’s so… strange…
Can you imagine that thing making you Coco and tucking you into bed. Good lord I’d soil my pants for weeks!!!
Lol! All is now explained. Makes perfect sense!
Thank you for your point of views. I will never look at this the same again 🙂
Love this guy – proper insane.
Can’t think of a fit for lizardmen or vamp counts… Ideas anyone?
Oh I REALLY like this one, it reminds me of Quake 1’s Shamblers! only….a lot scarier and a lot less fluffy! that’s probably a good thing XD
I thoroughly enjoy this monster… I don’t think it’s a problem not having a visible nose; lots of fish have pores on their lower jaw to help them sense prey.
I’m thinking that it might look rather nice with more of a rancor like colour scheme. lol
dont care what i ca use it for i want i want i want
This is possibly one of the best models I’ve seen in a while. I really love the simplicity of it, yet it tells the story very well. It looks like a beast, and one that is only really meant to kill. This is some top notch work and I’m highly impressed.
He would be easy to deal with. Here’s how in 7 easy stages:
1. Kill member of party who is really annoying.
2. When MeMaw charges, throw the fresh meat.
3. MeMaw chomps on (no longer) Irritating Ian.
4. Teeth skewer Ian and get stuck in his cadaver.
5. MeMaw uses claws to get cadaver off
6. Claws also get stuck in cadaver.
7. Kill MeMaw at your liesure
