Add More Heroes To The Hobbit: Strategy Battle Game
January 28, 2013 by brennon
It wasn't just Warriors of Chaos that got an update of models this weekend but the world of The Hobbit too. Check out some of the new models that are on advance order from Games Workshop...
First up we have the Grim Hammers and the Knights of Rivendell. I liked both of these units when I saw them in the movie, especially the Grim Hammers (no surprise there I bet!). They look pretty awesome I have to say, and I like the mass of flowing cloaks on the Knights.
The Grim Hammers are simple but they work as dour battle-worn warriors. I'm fairly sure I know what my next purchase is going to be for my small Dwarf contingent.
Next up are some heroes for the people of Middle-Earth. I like Radagast with his little hedgehog friend even though he is rather hard to spot! Elrond too is looking good, and far more commanding. The one thing with him however is that he doesn't look like Hugo Weaving, at least not to me.
It seems like the Evil side are getting a selection of heroes, or indeed villains, to lead their forces into battle. The Goblin King is an alternative sculpt that many spotted a while ago in the rulebook, but will people be that interested in picking him up if they already have the main boxed game?
Yazneg is looking rather cool, although he is a bit oddly stood when you look at the on-foot version. I do prefer his mounted version, especially since the Wargs look better than the ones from Lord of the Rings.
What do you think of these new Hobbit miniatures?

Sub par sculpts? Check. Overpriced to heck? Check. make Elrond look like he is scared of whatever he is attacking? Check. Make Yazneg look like he is posing for a catalogue? Check.
well played GW, well played.
Yazneg on foot is surely modelled on that Mario Balotelli meme photo that was all over the internet a while back.
Plus, £30 for 6 plastic guys on horseback.
The perrys do 12 for £18 , and they probably sculpted both sets.
The Perry’s didn’t do the new Hobbit models, thats why they all sort of suck. Look at them closer and you’ll notice it’s all 3D rendered models like all plastics are from GW. They have very little life in them now for this reason. Hand sculpted models are gone for good in GW 🙁
Both Michael and Alan Perry did sculpt the models.
BoW Ben
I’m not entirely convinced of the negativity towards these models. Firstly we know the models are expensive so that’s something we can all rule out as a definitively bad thing. Grim Hammers – Perfectly fine Dwarven miniatures. They look stoic and brutal in a selection of different brutish poses. Rivendell Knights – Horses look a bit lame at times but the riders themselves are looking neat. The capes as I mentioned look alright too, gives them a flowing/riding motion. Could potentially have had the horses in some more dynamic poses but overall not bad. Radagast – Looks like the movie… Read more »
Totally agree with there Ben. Its like you read my mind, I dont suppose you grew up next door to an irradiated wasteland or something did you? I dont have much of either an Elven or Dwarf army but I knew the Hobbit would provide plenty to choose from to fill the gap. Both troop types are among the best so far in the LOTR range in my humble opinion. The Perrys have done a top job and Im pretty sure their stuff will continue to get better and better despite Jacksons campy designs, please god no more Man-Kini wearing… Read more »
I really like those dwarfs. Do they look like they mean business or what. No prisoners taken by these grim boys.
Radgast and the dwarves are ok, the rest are caltrops imho
