Add More Characters To Your Tale In The Hobbit
April 1, 2013 by brennon
If you've been buoyed by the recent Desolation of Smaug previews and want more Hobbit goodness then check out these new pre-orders from Games Workshop...
First up we have the Gandalf and Bilbo set alongside the little Gollum vignette where he is playing with his most recent catch. I quite like the Gandalf and Bilbo pairing where they are standing, or indeed leaping into action.
In the next batch you have a Captain of Erebor and Thrain fresh from their defense of Erebor or maybe fighting to retake it from the deadly Orc forces that swarm around it.
As you might imagine I do like this pair, especially the Captain of Erebor. I like his valiant pose and his battle weary state.
Lastly we have the Captain of Dale done in the new Eastern style that we saw in the movie. Most of the model looks fine but something is a bit odd when it comes to the head. I find his expression a little odd and the stance a bit wooden.
Overall though it's a good haul of miniatures for The Hobbit so you can keep building your collection.
Which is your favourite?

Mixed bag The Gandalf and Bilbo poses look good, but poor Smeagol. Not sure how he can catch juicy sweet fishes with those hands. Nor how he can pick up and wear his precious. Captain of Erebor: WARNING! Foot on random little rock syndrome AND holding his weapon too near the head (oo-er missus) Down the pan paint jobs as we have now come to expect. Must be due to Austerity Measures, or more seriously, could it be that they are having to showcase the infinite layers of specific paint types that GW now sell rather than mixing and blending?… Read more »
What the bloody hell happened with this line of models? They all look like offal, Gollum being the king of them! I didn’t know GW used playdough for making models.
Simple reason. Perry > GW
That will be heresy for some, but it is just the way it is in the real world of sculpting.
Was given Arwen on horseback recently. Look gorgeous.
Thrain seems okay to me but the Captain of Dale and the Captain of Erebor are indeed sculpted with playDOH! lol
Yep. That was going to be my comment. There is one word missing from this range and it is Perry.
They aren’t terrible sculpts but for the cost and the fact that this game is not the most marketed I don’t see The Hobbit range going far. I’ve got buckets of LOTR rings minis but nothing at all for this. It is unlikely I’m going to either.
I think the presentation is deceiving. The recent stuff I’ve seen in the flesh from friends that bought them that I thought was poor sculpting on GWs website in this range (the 3 trolls, goblin king and Bilbo in his original version) are nothing of the sort , they are all very good detailed models when you hold the bare finecast/plastic or whatever. Its the painting. it would be churlish to say its ‘bad’ , because it isnt bad paInting, but they dont stand up against what GW studio used to put out, never mind what Ángel Giráldez does with… Read more »
It is bad for presentational work Noggin. That is the point. One expects more than “tabletop standard” to showcase models for what is supposed to be the Premier Team. We know they are better than that. Even though I am not a fan of the ‘Eavy Metal style, especially in the later stages, they are talented painters. I am still left thinking they have had their style restricted by having to use the plethora of different Citadel paint ranges. It could be they are not quite adept at using them yet. Like the sculpting, the painting is a mixed bag… Read more »
Yup. Thrain is the best one there, and not entirely coincidentally is probably the best painted. I agree they are not painted well enough for display models, I was trying to say I wouldnt call them ‘badly painted’ because they are better than half my efforts even like that, badly painted for a promotional model is what I would definitely agree with. I wonder if it is the paint, I noticed on one of the tau, cant remember which bit its painted red instead of the beigey colours, it was bad enough that it just hadnt covered the model properly… Read more »
Definitely like Thrain
Not seen the film so just checked to see if he has mauve chainmail in the film
Super costume design imho
I’m fine with the miniatures tbh. I quite like all the sculpts apart from the Captain of Dale which as I mentioned looks a bit odd.
The thing that annoys me is that they continue to use all this old music from Warhammer: Age of Reckoning. Surely they could use something from The Hobbit films instead?
BoW Ben
Maybe New Line issued a C&D notice for the LOLZ?
As funny as that might be, they most likely do have limits on what they can use from the movie.
These look horrible.
