Abyssal Berserkers! Mantic’s Dwarfs go a bit frothy!
March 24, 2011 by beerogre
Here's a quick look at the forthcoming Abyssal Dwarf Berserkers unit and characters for Mantic's Kings of War range.
Here's the Champion...
... and the full unit!
What do you think guys?
While I'm not a Kings of War player, I think they look really good. I have a soft spot for the Duergar from D&D, so I might pick up a box to make a "Dark Dwarf" force for our studio D&D game.
But if you are a Kings of War player and you play Abyssal Dwarfs, tell us what these guys are like.

Wow! I like these a lot better than the reg Dwarf versions.
They look great. Just as good as the other bezerkers. Must say although the plastic dwarfs do have a certain character that I do like, I much prefer this style. Looks like a proper dwarf, hard and menecing.
the vid doesn’t match the pictures… but the haramakis are nice !
Very nice minis. I like the Abyssal Dwarfs more and more. And very happy its not an Infinity article. =)
Can’t mantic afford decent painters, who can make their minis look cool? They would sell more of their stuff with great painted promotion minis
These are the dest dwarve they’ve come out with to date. Heck these ARE the best dwarve i’ve seem.
Not sure if the troublemaker is parodying his name or not but I aim nclined to agree. Some of the stuff Golem have done is ok but alot is barely above table top standard and doesnt show the figures in their best light. At the end of the day eye candy does shift plastic/lead.
Otherwise great minis from a company with a refreshing attitude.
*Sigh*
These look like the normal Dwarf Beserkers, but modified to be Abyssal…….. nice sculpts, but the Dwarf Beserkers had SERIOUS scale issues when placed on the tabletop with the other Mantic Dwarfs……… disappointed!
The regular dwarf berserkers (wich are the only dwarfs from Mantic I really like) don’t match up to the plastic ones? are they smaller? really?
Yes, they are a bit smaller and their faces vary quite a bit (smaller noses, different beards, etc…):
The size is not such a big problem though (imho). The smaller size can be explained to a certain degree by the smaller amount of armour and the lack of helmets. If you put an Ironclad and a berzerker next to each other it looks strange, but in an army where each of them form individual regiments, it’s no big deal.
I have to agree, I think a big selling point for GW stuff is the wow factor you get from seeing a mini that has been beautifully painted by the ‘Eavy Metal team. I know I for one have definitely been swayed. On the other hand though this is a realistic expectation, how many kids look at GW models and think wow my models are going to look like that only to be hugely disappointed when they dont.
@gamerjohn I also bet ‘Eavy Metal has sold plenty of air brush kits by default as well…
They look decent enough to me
I think people are so used to the clear cut ‘eavy metal style and it is an excellent way of showing off the minis in photos.
Can understand the criticism of the Mantic dwarves but have not seen them in the flesh so cannot fully comment.
However the other day saw a video with ethe Abyssal Dwarves on a turntable and that gave a much better impression and I really like them now.
The Bersrkers here are suitable tough and savage looking imho.
the abyssal dwarf ranges all borrow some part of their sprues from regular dwarfs. then they add the abyssal pieces. i imagine it will be the same for these berzerkers. the base sprue will be borrowed from the dwarf berzerkers and then they will have some metal or plastic abyssal pieces.
this business model is pretty good imo. it makes for cheaper production. i can imagine soon mantic will do an evil elves range that follows the same model.
im loving all mantic stuff. GW is falling farther and farther off my radar as mantic releases this stuff. keep em coming boys
