Tabletop Episode 11: Elder Sign!
August 27, 2012 by brennon
Wil Wheaton, Felicia Day, Bill Prady and Mike Morhaime take on the role of Occult Investigators as they tackle the Fantasy Flight card game based on the Cthulhu mythos, Elder Sign!
In Elder Sign you play a group of investigators and pulp heroes trying to ensure the survival of mankind by collecting information on the Elder Signs and ensuring the incarceration of the deadly forces of darkness.
Have you played this game? If so what did you think about it? It certainly inspired me to think about picking up the game. Always nice to have a selection of co-operative card games for your group to play.
What did you think of this episode?

That would have to be the best Tabletop I’ve seen. If the other half was interested I get Elder Sign……..anyway, who’s up for some tentacle jokes?
I think the only problem I had with this episode is that if you have the director in the show, she puts too many of her own segments in the video…
Still awesome episode 😀
I like this show, i like this episode…
But somehow, making a lovecraftian theme game playable by ten year-olds, with no sense of dread or mystery, seems like a waste to me. It’s just a glorified dice game… It should be a game of puzzles and skills. Or better yet, an RPG.
Mansions of Madness is good for that – just got it the other day and had great fun going through the first story. Puzzles a plenty 🙂
Agreed, but nothing wrong with glorified dice games lol.
I liked this one too, overall the series has been really good, the fiasco one I couldnt sit till the end of to be honest, it wasnt a good watch, but the little board games ones, great idea.
I think Ticket to Ride is still my favorite episode , but Elder Signs is definitely a game I could see me playing.
A good game and a classic show due to “tentacle, tentacle, tentacle”
Oh dear my lovely red headed one – what may you have started
The next episode (after Dixit) should do a Mansions of Madness episode! Wil as the Keeper, even if it is the first story (which i have played at least 3 times demo’ing the game) it would be such a characterful game and i can imagine them adding sound effects to bring this game to life!
Not a bad game just for a bit of light hearted entertainment (not often I put Cthulhu games into THAT category).
I didn’t really get into this episode. I found that while Wil and Felicia were really trying to get people excited the other two guests kind of bought the mood down. Bill Prady especially seemed like a bit of a kill joy. This in turn meant that Mike seemed like he was a bit afraid to say anything.
Maybe that’s just me though. Game looks fun but I don’t think this showed it off at its full potential, and that’s not the fault of Wil either.
BoW Ben
I think you are right, it didn’t have the usual vibe you get from these demo/showcases. I really enjoyed Fiasco and the players made the game seem a lot of fun. It all depends on who is participating I guess and this time around (despite Will and FD’s enthusiasm) it was a lackluster presentation. Still piqued my interest though.
Is it just me or does Hastur have a lamp-shade on his head??? Those Old Ones know how to party…
I’m still not sure if I want to buy/try this game. I really enjoy Arkham Horror, but not many of my friends want to play games set in the Mythos, and that makes me sad. 🙁
This wasn’t one of the better episodes, but it was still an entertaining diversion.
