New Star Wars: The Force Awakens X-Wing Sets Spotted From FFG?
August 18, 2015 by brennon
It looks like there might be some new X-Wing sets on the way from Fantasy Flight Games for the upcoming Star Wars film, The Force Awakens. See what you think of the images below that were snapped up from The Hairy Painter on Facebook...
As you can see it is sporting some new artwork on the front with a new version of the X-Wing too. The pre-painted models within the set have also got a brand-spanking new paint job to fit with the film.
This looks like a perfect opportunity to pick yourself up a new copy of the main boxed game so you get some fancy ships and different upgrade cards. I can imagine a fair few people are going to be chomping at the bit to get this set and it certainly makes a lot of sense from a marketing standpoint on FFG's part.
What do you think?

That’s just made of awesome sause!
Let’s hope we avoid the massive shortages causing extended periods of not being able to get anything in the shops this time around then.
That was my first thought. If they couldn’t keep with demand when there wasn’t a movie out, I hope they can when there is. Maybe being part of Asmodee will give them more resources to get enough sets made in advance.
I really like new color scheme for TIE Fighter.
It’s a neat scheme, but those solar panels need to be black if they are going to function correctly.
These look cool, I’ll definitely want one, but might pick up another original starter with the original trilogy colour scheme ships. This is so exciting!
I wouldn’t be surprised if this replaces the current starter as licensing often means having to keep up with the product.
Do you think they might have 2 versions of the game? A version with the current ships and a version with the newer ships or will the new stuff be backwards compatible?
I’m honestly not sure, though I do think the new stuff will be compatible with the existing game.
The TIEs look like repaints. They are missing a bunch of new details on the booms to the panels. I figured they would be missing the bottom turret because of the peg for the stand.
Or what I am looking at maybe a different variant according to some people. A “Special Forces” variant?
Timed release I suspect for end of year/early 2016. Any later than that and they lose the impact generated by the movie release slot. I would be frankly astonished if FFG don’t not have this available in time for Xmas. It will be.a staggering missed opportunity if they didn’t. Considering how challenging their existing manufacturing and fulfilment cycle is for X-Wing I wonder if they have got another plant online? I know they were lining up additional manufacturing capacity this year to scale up so it could well be they now have that on stream to handle a TFA themed… Read more »
Also did anyone spot that copy is shrink wrapped. You don’t shrink wrap prototypes (no point) which leads me to believe this is either a manufacture run sample or even potentially final product. If the latter they did very well to keep under wraps. I’m also slightly surprised they didn’t reveal at GenCon?
Of course could be an elaborate hoax, but why bother?
I did contemplate a hoax but I’m sure we’ll find out from FFG soon enough. If it is a hoax then I’m impressed by the commitment haha.

FFG are likely operating under enforced silence from Disney until the official marketing launch. They dont want any unapproved spoliers getting out ahead of the film so will be keeping licensees on a short leash. Bit like the AVP game being held back by the film studio but hopefully with smoother planning.
More money from me to you FFG.
It makes sense. As redben stated it keeps current with the license. I seem to recall reading elsewhere(on this forum I believe) that FFG had received approval from Disney for both X-wing and Armada licensing to continue.
One thing is for sure, I will grab a copy of it 🙂
Yeah I think they re-upped. The recent products have all started included Disney logos on them. They are in this together, and its a great move for both. FFG makes a really quality product.
Suddenly the game looks like it will go through a period of frankly EXPLOSIVE growth if promoted and distributed properly!
I have been expecting this though I reckoned teasers for this would emerge closer to the time. Then again, nothing leaks like the entertainment industry….
I will pick up the new stuff as well as the original gear to add to the fleets.
The only part I probably disagree with @brennon is over it replacing the current core set; I don’t see how that will work personally. If they tie themselves ‘only’ into Ep VII then they will run into problems matching those ships contextually with the current set of expansions. They really still need the core set with the original X-Wing and TIE cards for Luke, Biggs etc to validate the other Rebel expansion ships. Personally I see this sitting alongside the current core and expansions with a likely range of *Ep VII* Expansion packs for the X-Wing and TIE to introduce… Read more »
Also judging by the number of FB nukes in the last hour BoW should probably be expecting a polite takedown notice coming up anytime soon. It looks like FFG are desperately trying to quash this as no doubt it impacts them contractually. Out of respect to them (they do make great games) and not wanting to in any way hurt their relationship with disney I’ll personally refrain from blogging about this until Sept 5th when it officially leaks 😉 Was interesting to see regardless and I doubt this was much of a surprise to anyone once the Disney logos started… Read more »
Nah, they will just release Luke and regular TIEs as singles which actually cost more (and thus, make more money). It’s unlikely that having 2 nigh-identical core sets is actually good business. Updating the core set as they go is the best way to keep it “fresh” and “relevant.” People new to the game don’t care so much about new *expansions*… but they see a new *game* and it gets attention.
If I judge FF correctly then if it’s selling they will continue to sell it. They make great stuff for us but Christian Peterson is one the most focused businessmen I have seen. The bottom line is profit and growth. If I’m right then that’s good for us because they’ll keep selling profitable lines and I think Star Wars is going to go absolutely crazy after the next film and FF deserve their slice of that since X-Wing is one of the great games.
I dont think this is a hoax.. not the way FFG were deleting threads on their forum last night about it when the news broke… why do that for a hoax ?, Also i think we will be seeing this on the shelves very soon, at Gen Con during their In Flight Report, a comment was made about why things have been slow on the release side of things, it was because they were working on something big that they could not talk about but it was `On the Boat` wich is their way of saying its release is imminent..… Read more »
Oh I hope this won’t be due out so soon in September. Wave 7 is currently shipping, right after the Raider just arrived in stores.
My wallet can’t survive a release of that magnitude.
I knew those wings were white!
My mate tried to argue with me that they were still the same it was just the lighting in the trailer.
Looks like the T – 70 x wing has the boost icon…
…and just check out those s foils 🙂
Cool. I have not gotten into X-Wing, yet. Perhaps it is time to indulge.
It’s an excellent game. Elegant design, easy to learn, great fun. Get your wallet out. 😎
The X-wing type ship on the art doesn’t match the model or film… worried much? conspiracy perhaps?! …….lol
Doesn’t match? How so? Look at the “air intakes” on the engines. They are the semi-circles used on the ones show in the new trailers, (inspired by the original Ralph McQuarrie paintings before A New Hope.)
“air intakes”
I like Star Wars but the scientist in me flinches at all of that stuff. 😎
That’s great that ffg are including the new movie ships in x-wing along with the “Rebels” stuff and the expanded universe this game has longevity….. Just seen the new Star Wars Lego models from the new movie , which are out in September and they are looking very nice too…..
At GenCon FFG said they had something for Episode VII on the water. I wouldn’t doubt this is it.
