Lyonesse Is Burning Down! Wolsung SSG Battle Report – Inventors Club Vs Ven Rier Agents
It's time to get stuck into another Battle Report for you this weekend as we look at playing out Lance's first game within the world of Wolsung SSG by Micro Art Studios.
In this game we're going to see the Inventors Club (Justin) and Ven Rier (Lance) clashing as the city of Lyonesse is burning down around them. One side will be looking to set fire to buildings and more whilst the other is trying to put out the blaze.
This is Lance's first step into wargaming proper and we think it's a great narrative scenario which you might want to try out at home too!
Who do you think will come out on top?
Blogging At This Event:
Welcome To The Battle – Lyonesse Is Burning Down!
You heard us right, Lyoness is burning down and it's up to the Inventors Club led by Justin to try and put the fires out (I wouldn't hold out too much hope!).
Lance will be playing his first game EVER here as the Ven Rier Agents who are setting fires and causing distractions around the city.
Justin’s Crew – The Inventors Club
Taking on the challenge of controlling the fiery inferno threatening to engulf Lyonesse we have Justin playing as the Inventors Club.
He is controlling Thorvald Nielsgaard, Alice Tinkerly, a Lab Assistant and two Lab Golems.
Lance’s Crew – The Sly Ven Rier Agents!
Lance has painted up his first bunch of models for the tabletop and we think they've come out rather nicely. He will be, as mentioned before, taking control of the Ven Rier Agents.
In this merry band he has an Eisfield Generator, a Necrogolem, Elisabeth Suess, a Necrogolemic Workshop, Ursula and Jonathan Wormwood
The Table Layout – How Is Lyonesse Shaping Up?
Before we get stuck into the battle proper we thought we'd give you a look at how Lyoness is shaping up right now before we start burning down parts of it.
As you can see we've gone for a few distinct looking districts and really tried to bring to life the sense of character within the world of Wolsung.
Can you see any choke points and interesting options already opening up for our Steampunk leaders?
Deployment & First Moves Of The Game
With Deployment done the lads talk through where they've positioned some of their characters and look ahead to what they're going to be doing when it comes to their first moves.
Will Justin look towards putting out fires and will Lance continue to set things alight? Is that the shudder of a Necrogolem coming to life I hear?
Kicking Straight Into The Next Turn
With those initial moves over the guys start to plan out what they want to do with their next turn. This means some crazy vials of 'who knows what' getting thrown and a bit of a scuffle as the first signs of combat spring out of this once quiet part of Lyonesse.
How do you think things are going so far? Do you reckon you could spot a winner right now?
End Of The Turn – Fires Out, Mitts Off!
The guys get to the end of Turn Two and move on towards Turn Three with a new Initiative bid. With that done they look ahead to more bashing and bruising although the Lab Assistant seems content with pelting Elisabeth with bottles...
Justin also seems to enjoy fancy lightning fun times and Lance makes one of his characters go bampf!
End Of Round Three – It’s A Close One!
The game continues and the guys look towards a final last ditch attempt to play around with fire and see if they can actually bring anyone down.
Necrogolems are smashing the ground apart and Johanthan Wormwood has a surprise for Thorvald.
How will this all end up?
A Final Slice Of The Action
Here's a quick look at the game and some of the cool moments that I think will stick with Justin and Lance for a while. It was a neat skirmish, quick and simple, but a good way to show off how narrative scenarios play out on the tabletop in Wolsung.
What would you have done differently and where would you have tweaked and changed things?
End Of Game Round Up
Justin & Lance sit down to discuss what they felt about the game and where they think they'd change things if they took this scenario on again.
They name their men (and women) of the match and talk about what they like the most about the world of Wolsung SSG.
What has been your favourite moment in Wolsung?
Cool little scenario. I think it favoured the Van Rier agents though.Congrats on your first game, and nicely painted minis.
Thanks, think I want to repaint the golems again at some stage.
@lancorz really? I think the golums are great! Love the colours you’ve used on them – they’re very menacing but not drab. I’d be very pleased with them!
Yeah, it was a quick job at the time and I’d like to highlight them and do some more detail on some parts. Nit-picky stuff.
hi Justin, could you added a video high lighting some of Wolsung Ver 2.0 rules that changed. i know premeasuring is a thing now what else changed?
lance is going be a good painter me thinks, great work on those pants . the board and miniatures looked great fellas.
@lancorz Congratz on winning your first game! Now if you never play again you can tease @dignity that you have beaten him EVERY time you’ve played against him. How many of us can say we have a perfect win ratio?
Though I don’t play Wolsung myself, I always enjoy the Battle Reports and this was no exception!
Also @Lancorz- kudos on your first painted miniatures, they look more like the minis of someone who has been painting for ages- keep up the good work mate!
Thanks @Jonhay I’ve painted much larger pieces on canvas before but never anything to this scale, it was a fun and different experience.
Great game guys, I will have to check out Wolsung.
Great battle Report…now REMATCH! 😉
Guys, Spells are Quick Actions.
I see so many wasted opportunities! Whenever you moved Thorvald Nielsgaard or Jonathan Wormwood you could have cast their spells. Also, Lance – if you had a red card in hand for your last Wormwood Activation, you could have turned Nielsgaard into an Eisfeld! (and yes, Nelsgaard’s Armour only stops Shooting Attacks, not Magic Attacks or Projectiles!)
Nice game guy`s, and nice first time win under your belt Lance. Nice paint work on your mini`s Lance, but now you`ve started painting mini`s there`ll be no stopping you…………………….
As for re-visiting the big guy`s, i`d have a word with John.
Love ti! please do more Wolsung reports.
Well played, thought it might of been to much of a up hill struggle,
But once again, great idea for a game.
Nice to see some one getting in to it, have to say wish my painting was as good as that when i started.
Nice paint jobs on both teams.
@lancorz job well done!
Really fun battle report – well done guys.
I love the narrative you put into the setting and the way you tell the story of the game, and I love the way each of your games has looked like it’s taking part in a different part of the same city / world too.
More please!
