Steve Jackson to join Beasts of War at Salute!
April 13, 2011 by beerogre
Woohoo!!!
We've just had confirmation that the mighty Steve Jackson... that's right... THE Steve Jackson, author of some of the greatest Fighting Fantasy books in the series and one of the gaming demi-gods who started Games Workshop!
Will be joining Beasts of War as their special guest at Salute 2011!
We plan to have a chat with him about Fighting Fantasy... the books that started it all for us.
We'll see if we can get his views on the state of gaming as it is today.
... and we'll see if he'll take the mike to give us his views on the events at Salute!
What would you want us to ask him?
BoW Andy
WOW! I’m gutted I won’t be able to make it. I remember those fighting fantasy books as a kid with great affection. Well done guys, that man’s a true legend! I have no idea what I’d ask him. Perhaps you can get Darell to ask what is his favourite cheese?
Showing my greenhorns and saying I’ve never heard of him or his books.
Ah well, you guys might do a feature on him and his books and bring me up to speed.
Legend – I read/played the first edition of the warlock book, wish I still had it…
“Does he still one?”
“What games does he play for fun?” RPG, comp or wargames?
“Bads boys 2 or Point Break?”
“Good loser?”
im working my through the warlock of fire top mountan at the min great fun 🙂
BoW Justin
@tinracer “Bad Boys 2 or Point Break” which one do you want to watch first?
I thought you guys meant Steve Jackson from Steve Jackson Games. The picture and blog corrected my mistake!
What would you want us to ask him?
Cadbury’s Cream Egg – How does he eat his.
he has it his way
If he half unwraps it and bites the top off turn to page 51
If he smashes it to pieces and slurps up the residue turn to page 243
😀
Nice one! XD
House of Hell….one of the best out of the range by far, awesome, but so was Sorcery! Now that was an excellent series. My question:
If any of his books could be translated into a filmed version (hmmm or even a dynamic one where you change it at the key points), which one would it be?
@pedromondew
This’ll make you happy…houseofhellmovie.com 🙂
Wow! Steve Jackson! Thats cool BOW guys. Like many other, his books also sparked my interest in fantasy and gaming (that and a movie called ‘Hawk the Slayer’!). IMO, the guy is a legend in our hobby like the late great Gary Gygax. Now, what questions would i ask him…. When you were writing and creating the scenarios, monsters, magic and characters for first Fighting Fantasy books, what influences did you draw from? What do you think it is about games in general, not necessarily just wargaming, RPGs or video games, that make them such a universal attraction? Was there… Read more »
am i the only 1 that doesnt know who this guy is
and does that now mean in band from bow becuase of this like when i got the hobbits mixed up which means im now band from my local GW
I know these words… and yet they seem to make no sense…
Steve Jackson was one of the guys who set up Games Workshop back in 1975. He wrote (and co-wrote) the greatest series of “choose your own adventure” books ever written called Fighting Fantasy.
It’s because of guys like him, that you have any games to play today… and it’s because of guys like him you have a Beasts of War!

Wow I remember reading his Fighting Fantasy books in primary school…. not only did his books encourage me to read more as a child, it also opened my eyes to the science fiction & fantasy genres…. this lead to D&D and later on Warhammer Fantasy (and 40K of course). The Warlock of Firetop Mountain will always be my favorite (Appointment with F.E.A.R. is a close second, mainly because you could read through the book with 4 different powers). Steve Jackson, I salute you! (no pun intended) P.S. Please ask him if he checks in on Warhammer Fantasy and 40K from… Read more »
all i can say is u lucky lucky bstards (this is not a swear word btw its a name of a mp) him and ian are both legends. space assassin was my 1st one i got and soon had about 20 of them and my all time favs were freeway fighter (im a mad max freak) and sword of the samurai(who doesnt like them).also forget about asking him questions just get a blood sample of him and clone him nothing bad ever happens when you clone someone
I’m sorry but the only THE Steve Jackson to me would be the founder of Steve Jackson Games.
Glad to see A Steve Jackson as a guest though, could be interesting. 🙂
If not for THE Steve Jackson… that Steve Jackson wouldn’t have got a break writing some Fighting Fantasy books… 😉
Your point being?
Basically they both wrote for Fighting Fantasy.
Steve Jackson(1) (the one who setup GW) helped establish an entire Genre that the other Steve Jackson(2) now works within.
They are both ‘Legends’, but you have a lot to thank Steve Jackson(1) for 😉
Wow that’s confusing so is it Steve Jackson(2) who invented munchkin
I remember reading warlock of firetop mountain but never finsihed it (twas when books werent cool).
But my question for the co founder of games workshop is this……….
Why so pricey on the models and hobby? Did shareholders take over your fantasy project?
im pretty sure i read an interview with him that he has no control over the running of the company anymore ie hes a bit like the queen no real power just a figurehead. mind you he could just say that so he doesnt look bad to all the disgrunted fans
Here’s Mr. Jackson’s authors biography from http://www.fightingfantasy.com Steve Jackson is a veteran of the games world. Together with Ian Livingstone, the pair founded Games Workshop and created the Fighting Fantasy Gamebook series. He is also co-founder of Lionhead Studios (‘Black & White’) with legendary PC game designer Peter Molyneux. In the 1990s he was a columnist for the Daily Telegraph and his weekly Games Page included game Reviews, features on the history of games, news and puzzles. Apart from Fighting Fantasy, his game designs include ‘The Warlock of Firetop Mountain’ boardgame, ‘Battlecards’ (a collectible cardgame series which pre-dated Magic), the… Read more »
…… who? He setup what now? Oh…….. he is the reason I am broke. Gotcha.
Well, this just sucks 🙁 I’ve got to move house so can’t come to Salute 🙁
Steve Jackson (1) is the Big Bang of Wargaming. Without him, we wouldn’t exist.
Ask him:
What do you think of the state of Fantasy in the Market today, given the economy and dominance of Sci-Fi? What in your opinion, is the most likely event that would revitalize a Fantasy genre miniature boom? Do you prefer the early stages of gaming design? Or a fully fleshed out universe which allows more time to be devoted to specific plot lines ect?
Hah this guy went to the same university as me…so glad to have some kick ass alumni from my uni including this dude, and Robert Earl who writes for Black Library 🙂
I got all the early books when they came out…may have to add the new(ish) boxset to my birthday list
BRING BACK CAR WARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wrong Steve Jackson…
