Those of us who missed out on the Warpath Kickstarter are now getting our chance to jump in on the expanded world. Mantic Games has opened up pre-orders for the two player starter set Operation Heracles.
Now you and a friend can get together and battle it out on the expansive universe of Warpath and look at all you get in the starter set:
- Dual Format Warpath/Firefight Rulebook
- Operation Heracles Quick Start Guide
- 8x Command Dice
- 12x Plastic Activation Counters
- 12x Plastic Suppression Counters
- 4x Plastic Shield Counters
- 2x Plastic Tag Counters
- 10x Plastic Objective Counters
- 5x Multi-Part Hard Plastic Enforcers with Weapon Options
- 5x Multi-Part Hard Plastic Pathfinders with Weapon Options and D.O.G. Drone
- 5x Multi-Part Hard Plastic Peacekeepers with Weapon Options
- 1x Multi-Part Plastic Peacekeeper Captain

It is a nice start to get you playing and then the problem is deciding whether to play Warpath for large battles or Warpath: Firefight for squad sized games.
Pre-order is going on now with delivery to begin mid-April.
The only question is: Enforcers or Forge Fathers?

I got the box set of both set of rules and the background book, and have been really enjoying all three. The Background book is nice and fluffy and really adds depth to the warpathverse (Did you know that Asterians first unleashed the Plauge??? Of course they did …… bloody Elves) I have played three games of firefight and it is a lot like other massed combat space games (killing individual models)and was fun to play. We didn’t quite have enough models to do it justice but we also played Wapath proper (moving and killing squads ) and I my… Read more »
That looks like very nice release. That said I am not fan of Father Huscarl with his Clone Wars cartoon beard.
Can’t say I’m impressed with the core model selection. For a game that suggest it’s designed for truly epic, massive conflicts on the tabletop, that’s a very small amount of miniatures…
Have they improved the background any?
This set is the smaller of two being offered and is geared more toward the skirmish-sized Firefight rules. There’s also a mega starter set with roughly twice as many models that’s geared more toward the larger scale battles of Warpth. Both sets of rules are included in both sets. And there’s also a new Warpath Universe Sourcebook that is nearly 200 pages of Background, stories and art. It greatly exands on what was available before. I, for one, feel like Firefight is a set of rules that does for sci-fi skirmish gaming what Kings of War did for Fantasy Mass… Read more »
But the larger set seems to be a hundred quid. I was hoping for something that would compete with the GW “Dark Vengeance” starter set. Sure the mantic deal is £15 cheaper, it’s also 16 model short, not snap-fit and not quite as detailed plastic.
I just feel disappointed, given how Mantic stressed this would be a fluid, fast game that allowed large armies to fight it out on the battlefield, I was at least expecting them to at least match GW in content for the starter…
Definitely would have expected the set to at least compete well on price with the GW starter sets but it doesn’t even do that.
Shame, I quite like some of the newer Forge Fathers stuff (not the older ones with the awful looking beards though) and had contemplated a cheap little army to proxy as Iron Hands for 30k but compared to Betrayal at Calth the value just ain’t there.
??? There are more minis in the Mantic mega-set than in Dark Vengeance, and it’s cheaper. And you get two games in one, and counters etc. It’s a much better deal than DV. And a better game to be fair.
Your statement is not entirely true@bigfatfred. Yes there are more minis but the mega set is far more expensive.
The Mega Set is £99 and contains 69 minis. Dark Vengeance is £65 and contains 49 minis.
The Mega Set contains 29% more minis for 43% increase in cost.
This doesn’t even consider Mantic’s lower production quality. Which game mechanics you prefer is neither here nor there as that is personal preference.
I was honestly expecting Mantic Games to blow the GW starter set out of the water on the amount of contents. I was thinking something like (to give an idea of where I’m coming from) 20 Veer-myn Night Crawlers and 4 Nightmares versus basically the Enforcer faction booster; 5 Peacekeeper, 5 Enforcers and 2 Jetbikes. That comes in from Mantic’s own webstore at £56.47 and is 36 miniatures instead of the 33 we get, is entirely new plastic kits and if you price that at £50 would be a fine deal. “But should Mantic not charge for the tokens/rules?” What… Read more »
“much better” depends entirely on what you are looking for. More miniatures yes but they’re much lower quality I’ve had a fair bit of experience with Mantic via Deadzone (which comes with similar miniatures to the ones shown) and they’re hard work. Many components don’t fit together properly, especially with the Forge Fathers, the plastic often needs a lot of clean up and the details can be a little soft. They really don’t compare well with GW at all and although I can see where Mantic are coming from and what they’re trying to do by sacrificing quality to keep… Read more »
The problem that Mantic have set up is due to the business model they chose. They make cheap models for there games and as proxies of GW games that tend to sell at a much higher price bracket. Pros and cons to this business model have been excepted from the gaming community for some time now and that’s totally fine. But when that company raises it’s prices or sells something not in line with the expected price range it will rub the wrong way people accustomed to it being cheaper. For me I’m surprised they didn’t sell the beginner two… Read more »
I think you’re right there @manpug. Folk just expect Mantic stuff to be cheaper than GW. That is the bed Mantic have made for themselves. If the Mega Set was more like the £65 GW charge for Dark Vengeance, it would be a real competitor and I would buy it in a heartbeat. Sell either half of the mega set for £50 as an army in a box and it’d be a good buy but £100 for both armies isn’t nearly as tempting. The smaller set isn’t actually too bad a price for a starter set at £50 until you… Read more »
The problem I have with this is that Mantic need to stay cheaper than GW to justify buying their products. While their games are usually fun the miniatures aren’t that great. If Mantic put their prices up then their quality needs to increase to match that. There are signs that this is starting to happen, but it’s not across the range. Some of the recent hard plastic miniatures have been exact that – hard plastic of the sort used by scale model kits and GW. I ordered one of the crazy boxes last year and there was a load of… Read more »
nice space dwarfs.
Amen brother ….. (See GW SPACE DWARFS ……. *mutters* genocidial, unimaginitive, b@$tards)
Will there be any BoW content, possibly coordinated with Mantic, for the launch of this game in April?
That’d be a great idea
Now that Warpath will be out in a few weeks what is your plans for it? I think some let’s play games would be totally cool. A really good review of the army types and minis would be great.
