Unboxing: Dungeons & Dragons Monsters Paint Set
February 1, 2019 by dignity
The Army Painter has brought out the Official Dungeons & Dragons series of paints which is divided into two sets; today we're looking at the Monsters Paint Set.
This set contains 36 acrylic paints, including metallics and washes, bottled in new 12ml dropper bottles to reduce waste and avoid drying out.
The paint set also comes with a free exclusive Owlbear miniature made by Gale Force 9 to put your new palette to the test.
What colour scheme would use on your owlbear?

I have the Mega Paint set. Were would I find a name comparison? For example Rust Monster equals XYZ in the Mega Paint set.
Or are some of those colors unique/exclusive to the set?
Owlbear, I would stick with brown but use a very dark scheme. Make him almost black with some brighter highlights around the face.
I disagree. The smaller bottles suck. You are getting 36 x 6ml = 216ml less paint for a higher price because of the D&D name. The excuse that you could not configure the box in a different way with the larger bottles does not fly with me. The excuse there is less waste also does not fly because Army Painter offers far larger sets that to me are a waste. I am willing to bet that Justin still has not touched paints from the big set he showed off as a present some time ago. If you tell me they… Read more »
I agree that the brushes and a primer should have been included here. I don’t mind the smaller pots of paints as you might not be doing quite as much painting on a handful of D&D creatures – but I see why it would be annoying.
I wouldn’t mind the smaller bottles in a starter set but AFAIK the regular D&D bottles are the same size. And that is making them expensive, especially compared to the bigger Army Painter or Vallejo droppers. And a brush should have been included too. Primer isn’t needed because the D&D minis come primed if I’m not mistaken,
True, but that’s only the stuff from WizKids. The Gale Force Nine miniatures aren’t and neither are the vast majority of other dungeon creatures from other creators, nevermind as a general rule for good painting tips.
I guess there’s a problem trying to pack aerosol into something like this I suppose too.
Also true… I remember my first miniatures were primed with a brush and plain white XD
As a side note I should add that the kit does come with a pot of grey primer.
I also brought the mega paint set. I found the paints to be of a poor quality, with poor coverage and terrible dilution. I have been painting miniatures for over 30 years (a few as a profession) so have some experience, my advice would be to buy a few bottles first to see how you get on before purchasing a paint set. My paint set now sits untouched in a box (apart from the washes which are very good) and I use a mix of other manufacturers. I also have to point out that I brought the set a few… Read more »
I had some issues with Army Painter paints when i got the mega set. They always seemed very thin and weak no matter how much i shook the bottles. Fixed it in the end by turning them upside down when i store them and I haven’t had any problems since.
Cheers I’ll give that a go. Tried that before unsuccessfuly with model colour but as AP are a different make up let’s hope for the best
My preference is for larger paint bottles but having said that if there are colours that you might use or can never find a use for or just in case I might need a little for a mix, then for 70 yoyos it is good value.
I like the idea of this as I have always bought characters not monsters but I’m in the same position as a lot have said when I got back into paint got myself a mega paint set. like to see a name list to there own paints.
to get someone into it think its a good idea.
I do like the owlbear anyone know if cant see it on there website to buy.
not a bad starter set but neither is it a good one. for those just starting it will appeal im sure but then the seasoned painting old farts out there will see the difference in pot sizes and cost and be tutting whole heartedly lol All I see is another avenue for the newbie to get into the hobby thus keeping up demand and these companies going, which benefits my hobby long turn as without newbies we are doomed. As for that owl bear id like to try it as a polar bear variant like the owl headwig (the harry… Read more »
that is a lot of good colours in one contest box, good job d&d and army painter
looks a good paint set and the model looks fab the ultimate angary bird.
Iooks like something that could be ok start for beginners I guess. The Owlbear and Minsc are always nice though 🙂
I am still using my P3 paints from Privateer Press I purchased maybe thirteen years ago.
Since returning to the hobby a month or so ago after a seven year absence they are all in tip top condition and have meant I do not have to pay £hundreds to replace them.
The mix in this pack would have been good had I needed to purchase from scratch, although I agree a brush or two would have been helpful. But do Army Painter supply the best miniature paints on the market?
I really hope they haven’t renamed all their paints again for this set. I hate it when they do that. Its bad for the people who buy the sets and go for replacements, or a different shade of blue and end up with the same pot again, and its bad for other people who try to follow guides written for these sets, or by people who own them.
