Community Spotlight: Deathly Shades, Classic Beholders & Blood Rage Monsters
June 1, 2018 by brennon
We've got another Community Spotlight for you this week as we look back towards what YOU have been doing in the Hobby & Painting Forum AND over in the Projects section of the website.
There are loads of awesome goodies for us to check out that you've been tinkering with and we just love seeing how you've been inspired!
Age Of Sigmar Undead by while
The first set of models we're going to be looking at comes from while who has been tinkering away on some Age Of Sigmar, specifically some of the shade-like creatures from the Grand Alliance of Death. Here, for example, is the Knight Of Shrouds.
What caught me here was the way the metal had been done. I thought that the metal had been done with a great rusted and ancient look, which you can very much see on the sword blade. This then contrasted nicely with the look of the dark robes and the bright balefire interior. Even the leather on the sword sheath has had some great ageing done to it.
You can see a similar look on this fellow shade from the range...
Some excellent painting which will no doubt inform the way the rest of while's force will look when the big release comes out later this year for Age Of Sigmar. If I were to offer some advice I would also say to look at adding some more to the bases to bring them to life a little more, framing the miniature a little.
D&D Beholder by chaosgorka
Next up we're looking towards something awesome from the Dungeons & Dragons collection. Here we have an epic Beholder by chaosgorka!
Now that is an awesome monster with a brilliant scheme. The work across the purple armour, the snarling teeth, the big pink gums and the yellow eye is superb. I love the little touches of highlighting and shading which brings that all to life.
The purple skin could be something which looks very samey across the model as a whole but thankfully I think the extra effort put in by chaosgorka has gone a long way towards creating a wonderfully vibrant miniature.
Some poor adventurers are going to have fun being killed by this!
Blood Rage Models by jammyjim
Last but not least we have a range of models from the Projects. Here we have some of the amazing Blood Rage miniatures painted by jammyjim.
Jammyjim has been painting a lot of the models from the Blood Rage collection including a lot of the extras from the Kickstarter. However, as you'll see from the Sea Serpent, he is putting a LOT of effort into making these pop.
My favourite from his current collection is the amazing work on Fenris.
Even though a lot of the model is black and grey I think that the subtle way the colours have been brought up suits the model as a whole. This is how you make black look good; it doesn't have to all be themed after the depths of midnight!
I kinda wish I still had Az's copy of the model so I could paint it up for him!
Last but not least we have the raging Fire Giant from the set with burning sword in hand. Once again, stunning work on the skin and armour here and plenty of additional detail work makes the model pop.
Now, there's a lot more left for him to paint and he has been talking about how he will be doing a LOT more models as they pop up on his painting desk. I cannot wait to see how the rest of the collection turns out.

That’s a good effect on the Knight Of Shrouds’ sword. I think the dark parts of the blade are what give the impression of it having been in the ground and dirt over a long period of time.
That beholder is insanely good! The eyes are spectacular
Cool to see some shades and shrouds painted up and I like that Beholder!
Very nice Bloodrage minis, from my favourite board game of all time 🙂
