Fancy A $350 D&D Dragon? Check Out WizKids’ Towering Balagos
August 18, 2022 by brennon
Remember the mighty Balagos, Ancient Red Dragon that we talked about back in February? Well, this miniature (megature?) is available for you to snap up now from the folks at WizKids for use in your D&D games and beyond.

Previous images of the dragon gave us a look at the renders but we've now been able to get a peek at the final painted version that you'll be able to snap up. For the price, you'd expect this to be pre-painted and I have to say, this doesn't look bad! I would be very happy with this smashing down onto my tabletop.

As you can see, Balagos is pretty huge. He comes with a detachable set of wings and tail for ease of transport and is a massive eighteen inches tall with a twenty-four-inch wingspan. Seems like the perfect end-of-campaign boss for a D&D party to come up against.

I kind of wanted there to be a branded can of D&D pop that comes along with Balagos. Ah well. Now, this miniature was going to originally be $420 but it is now $346 instead. So, that drops to jus under £300 at around £290 if you wanted one for yourself over here in the UK.
I am a massive fan of dragons and so seeing something like this immediately gets my attention. Would I buy it for myself? No! But, I could see this being a really fun gift for a dedicated Dungeon Master that has been working on your campaigns and telling stories for years. If your adventuring party joined forces and pooled some cash that could be very nice indeed!
Could you be tempted by a massive pre-painted dragon?

It’s a nice dragon, but no I don’t fancy one 😉
“this miniature was going to originally be $420”
Nice.
Drop the price to 50 quid and I might be interested… but that’s a no way in hell price…
Even if I was rolling in money and could afford it… the usefulness is limited!
How often will a party fight a big dragon? And if they do fight multiple times… doesn’t that mean GM is just looking for an excuse to get out his dragon?
D&D ‘players’ are not the target market. D&D is now in full hipster mode. The ‘real’ fans are the ones who buy all the limited edition books, the most expensive Beadle & Grimm editions, metal dice, watch every episode of the most hip youtube series…and have never played the game.
Much like the boardgamers with collections of hundreds of games all shrink wrapped, buy the mega KS games, and never play then ever.

It’s all about the whales.
Off the top of my head, McFarlane toys and Schleich have pretty sick dragons that are about 1/6 to 1/10 the cost of this one, and I know they aren’t the only ones.
This is for the brand-faithful only.
Edit: Oh, this guy’s $350; for some reason I was thinking he was $250. So, the ones I mentioned are an even smaller fraction of this one’s price. A fool and his money, and all that…
I ran a campaign once in which the PCs were giants who were fighting massive dragons and I looked into the McFarlane line for dragons back then. I ended up going in other directions- I think it was because the McFarlane dragons weren’t as big.
Ooh nice one but not 300£ nice.
That is one great looking dragon.
Anyone paying that much money, for that model is a moron.
That’s a nice dragon, but agree that the stickerprice isn’t equally nice. After a few Reaper Bones KS, I have plenty of dragons. But if my player wanted to buy me this one, I wouldn’t complain. But I don’t see my players paying that much for their own TPK 😛
And my lottery numbers are…?
That looks pretty cool, but I don’t think it would be the largest dragon that I have. There have been a few stupidly huge dragons over the years, I think starting with the Sandra Garrity one from Magnificent Egos. The old Wizards of the Coast red dragon, Cang the Implacable, Visceralyn the Oracle Dragon, Ma’al Drakar or Smaug. It is pretty fun to have an idiotically massive dragon drop onto the table and make all the PCs soil themselves. -This dragon doesn’t seem nearly as stupidly big as any of those other ones I mentioned (at least from the scale… Read more »
