Dropzone Commander 2nd Edition News Coming Monday!
July 21, 2017 by brennon
Hawk Wargames just put out a little teaser of what's coming with Dropzone Commander 2nd Edition! Watch on Monday for our interview with Dave...
Here's what they had to say...
"We are in the stages of alpha testing the proposed changes and a closed beta will also take place with our Hawk Talon scheme. We expect a release in Q4 2017 with a release date announced closer to the time.
2nd Edition will bring balance to existing units and enhance a player's collection, not invalidate it. We want every unit to be playable. New units are in development which will be previewed over the next few months.
Beasts of War have interviewed Dave and they will have a video for you on Monday with more details including proposed changes and even more new artwork, including this incredible Archangel squadron!"
...so make sure to check back on Monday to make sure you get all the news on what's coming for Dropzone Commander in the future.
Will you be watching?

This would be a great opportunity for some more plastics (hint hint)
Oooo, ive not delved into this one yet. Maybe this will be my chance
I haven’t managed to get a game of first edition yet… I guess it will be easier to learn 2nd since I don’t have to unlearn 1st.
Realy nice, I’m a big DzC fan so I’m looking forward for this one!
For Hawk it is a good way to get some trust back from the community after the Dropfleet debacle…
Goodluck guys
This is the first i’ve heard of a ‘Dropfleet debacle’. What are you refering to?
Hawk had underestimated the amount of product they would be shipping and also discovered that their internal order processing system wasn’t set up for speed & efficiency. Many people also failed to understand that Hawk isn’t a big company so they got upset when they didn’t get their goodies on time. This being the internet era this resulted in lots of angry people screaming for blood on-line … As of now they are shipping the wave 2 items of the kickstarter and have had to cancel the printed maps because the manufacturers they had couldn’t/wouldn’t produce them. It’s not the… Read more »
Didn’t communicate enough? More like didn’t communicate at all, no transparency at all, kept everything hidden from us, and as to their worthless gesture of £5 store credit for not delivering the very thing we need to play our battles on, well….
The wave 1 pledge did have one map.
It’s not ideal and the store credit isn’t a replacement for not getting the physical version of the stuff, but at least it is something.
OTOH … we are getting the digital files required to print them, which effectively means we get infinite reprints at any scale we want using whatever means we have.
I like it, because it gives me an option I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
Such is crowdfunding. I find that most crowdfunders state an estimated delivery time. The word ‘estimated’ is used for a reason. Appreciate the feedback.
I’m a big fan of Hawk Wargames and put a lot of effort in building a gaming group around DzC. We played and play the game a lot So I’m not bashing at them. I pledged in a fair share of kickstarters and I’ve been in great campaigns (7th Continent) and in realy bad ones (Demigods). And the guys from Hawk didn’t handle their KS well in my opinion. Of course delays are common in campaigns and that’s not realy a problem as long as the creators communicate with the backers. And let’s be honest Hawk didn’t communicate at all.… Read more »
So looking forward to this hopefully the new edition will ironout some of the kinks without changing the rules too much.
Excellent! Gives me a 2nd opportunity to try and kickstart interest at my local clubs
I didn’t know there was a ” Dropfleet debacle “. ?
I like Dropfleet! I have all four factions.
I only hope the new book will be enough ‘value for money’ content-wise. I loved reading the first edition books, but I’ve hardly worn them out yet.
If 2nd edition is just a rewrite I’m less likely to jump onto it.
The ‘debacle’ being referred to was the Kickstarter delays. Some pledgers got their stuff after it became available at retail.
It’s all relative, of course. I bought into the Shadows of Brimstone Kickstarter in 2013 and am still waiting for at least half my stuff. That’s a debacle. Hawk’s project suffered from unfortunate delays…
As for 2nd edition DZC, cannot wait! I REALLY hope that the infantry combat is streamlined. That’s my only real gripe with the game.
a great looking ship.
I have been awaiting this announcement for most of the year! I’m very curious to see what gets changed as it is still a pretty strong and balanced game in first edition. There are a few sub optimal units languishing in niche roles that need love but not many.
A redesign of fast mover mechanics seems inevitable and may well be the headline feature given Archangels on the cover! After that a general tidy up of edge cases and the overall balance pass to bring those neglected units back into contention.
I wonder if they’re going to extend the rules/interaction between Dropfleet and this game as a result of the update.
Maybe a mixed campaign but now from the dropzone commander point of view ?
Hey Limburger, Are you playing DZC in Limburg, we just started with 4 people, but would like to meet more DZC people. We live in Geleen, Sittard and Kerkrade.
well I’m still waiting for my dropfleet commander kickstarter pledge. I do hope they get rid of the stupid endless spawning rule for the UCM drone controller unit. Unlimited drones from something that clearly has limited capacity is absurd!
@heavygear02 – I’m with you on both points. I’ve been keeping Dropfleet at arm’s length until the rest of my pledge arrives. While the delays are irritating, Hawk does make beautiful stuff. They also make an effort to engage the community with regards to rules issues. It’s a long way from perfect, but I still like what I see in them overall.
I’ll be preordering this from somewhere. Hopefully it’s worth it.
I’ve been meaning to get started with Dropzone for ages, so looking forward to 2nd Edition now as my kick off point.
Dropfleet was a cakewalk compared to how Palladium have handled the Robotech RPG Tactics Kickstarter and dealt with backers. 3 years and they are still “getting quotes” for Wave 2, and haven’t shown of any sculpts despite repeated promises to do so.
Put it another way. Since Wave 1 of RRPGT shipped to the majority of backers, Hawk have launched, funded, and will have shipped the entirety of the Dropfleet Commander campaign, all whilst maintaining a release schedule for Dropzone Commander, handled entirely in-house and in hard plastic.
People tend to be pretty forgiving if you communicate honestly people; nearly everyone knows that things can happen with small companies and sometimes it leads to delays.
But not talking to people about when they might get their stuff just gives the feeling that you bring fobbed off. There isn’t a reason not to reply.
Honestly it surprises me because all the people working Hawk War-games seem to really passionate and bust a gut.
Interesting. I think a second edition could be a real help – ironing out some of the more complicated rules which act as a barrier to new players, giving an opportunity to rebalance certain units / factions and be an opportunity to reinject some more vigour into the game. Didn’t see it coming – even though I think it’s a good idea – so quite pleased about this. For me the areas I’d most like to see updated are infantry combat (I still want it to feel special and different, but I’d like it to be less complex) and movement… Read more »
