Hobby Lab Open Challenge – Create Your Own Fresh Water Terrain!
January 8, 2017 by lancorz
With Bootcamps underway and a Wintery holiday closing in we've decided to postpone the Fresh Water Terrain Challenge until a little later. This way you can find some time during your holidays to get out the crafting equipment and join in too!
Create Your Own Fresh Water Terrain
...and share it with us in the forums.
What Is Fresh Water Terrain?
We're looking for people to make interesting terrain pieces based on the kind of terrain you would find around Fresh Water areas inland. This could be fishing huts, jetties, bridges, boats or even actual terrain features to do with water including rivers, waterfalls, lakes, ponds, lochs, and swamps.
Let your mind go wild and explore what possibilities are open to you across all manner of genres. A good tip might be to hit up Google and check out the waterways of Britain!
How Does The Competition Work?
The competition will run from the 27th October 2016 until 31st December 2016 and we'll be reporting on the projects that you have been working on throughout the competition.
To share your terrain we’re going to be opening up the Hobby Forums for you to create Projects which we will delve into and keep an eye on throughout the competition. Some tips for you…

Awesome. Now ideas…ideas.
Awesome, have some hobby blags and hacks which are watery im itching to try out….
I have the glimmer of a plan. 🙂 But I’ve never done it before and don’t know if it’ll work and
whenever I talk about any WIP projects, something happens to jinx it into the ground. 🙁
But maybe a provisional MWAHAHAHA might not be too far out of line…. 😉
I have about 50 ideas and little clue on how to execute them … Research needed. Anyone know how to make a 28mm bottled water delivery van that happens to be driving inland?
@soapdodger might be a bit big but 😉

Oh yeah!! Looking forward to this. And the timing is perfect, as I will be on vacation for the next 3 weeks. So I will return just in time to start the challenge. I probably go for a frozen river, 28mm, WW2 for my Bolt Action table. I’m thinking about plexiglas (got some laying around). And candle wax. Someone at a convention told me that he did his frozen lake with this. But he didn’t went into detail. Some experimentation is needed for this. The results from the winner of the last challenge really woke my ambition. Let’s see what… Read more »
Sounds interesting, sounds like I will really be able to sink my teeth into this one, I would say with hobbyween on it is a perfect fit with a slasher style idea, having the cabin in the wood style thing going on.
IM IN!!!!
Not going to sit on the fence for this one. Count me in.
Fresh water is the easy part.
How do you model 28mm scale midges though?
This’ll be fun. I’ll have to get in on this one
Gives me some time to make an entry. But I hope you haven’t forgotten Hobbyween @lancorz! 🙂
We haven’t @herrigold Don’t worry, it’s been a busy few weeks. Hobbyween winners will be announced very soon 🙂
so pleased you reposted this @lancorz – i was looking for it earlier today to see how long was left. definitely think i should be able to get some pieces made before the deadline 🙂
i have an idea to make sewer pipes as a modular terrain pieces – something along the lines of the old spacehulk board tiles, but using the insides of sewer pipes to fight in, instead of spaceship corridors.
Im glad of the extension. I did start a project which unfortunately met a sticky end so I’ll have to start from scratch again.
Great news – my wrist is literally strapped up from pushing to try and meet the earlier deadline. Now I have no excuse for not getting something submitted…
I think I have to forfeit this challenge. I had some great ideas for a frozen river. Made a plan and everything. And then I broke my midfoot bone. Nothing to serious, but enough to keep me from walking and building. Next time!
