The screen shot looks like John presenting his newborn.
Really enjoying this series. I have never used Army Painter Quick Shade as I always use the trusted GW Agrax Earthshade. What is the benefit of the Quick Shade?
Do not paint the StuH Commander black! Assault guns were not part of the Panzertruppen. They belonged to the artillery. So their uniforms were grey.
But I fear the summer camo disappears from session to session. I can barely tell a difference in these shades of green. The autumn version on the other hand looks awesome.
And my last point. I really like the StuH’s camo. Can’t wait to see it finished.
Normally, @setesch – I would totally agree with you. Panzer black is normally not the correct color for a StG or StuH crew, as we say during Dunkirk Week: This link goes directly to where we cover this … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jDFlHmVUAs&t=937s HOWEVER … the Catch-22 here is that these guys are Waffen SS? And later in the war many panzer units were getting StuGs instead of actual tanks, so late war you do see some panzertruppen (even in the Wehrmacht) in black in StuGs, only because the Germans didn’t have enough panzers for all the regiments so some panzer crews got… Read more »
But we are talking about StuH, not StuG!
The Sturmhaubitzen were so few that all of them were issued to the artillery units. Even in the SS. For a normal StuG III G you’re right, but @johnlyons opted for the 10.5cm howitzer.
Yes, I know it’s a StuH instead of a StuG. And again, I these things usually belong in artillery, with gray uniforms. Please see the link I posted above where I’m telling the whole community – in video – that they belong in artillery gray. 😀 All I’m saying that if @johnlyons wants to put the commander in panzer black, there is a case that could be made for it. Quite a few points to make here. Yes, when we’re talking vehicles, sturmgeschütz and sturmhaubitze are two very different things. But when we’re talking formations, “sturmgeschütz abteilung” (or later, brigades)… Read more »
Ok, I do agree on that. But please no red piping with black uniforms. If we asume this StuH is manned by Panzer crews they would have pink piping. Even back then a Panzermann would stick to his colours 😉
John Stugg’s where crewed by the Artillery as they where assault guns so the uniform should be Grey not Black even whittman changed to grey when he commanded stuugg
The three tone camo looks spot on! The quickshade will do the rest.
Not entirely convinced with the infantry but hard to tell now that’s all glossy. I’ll waiti for the Antishine to give my final verdict 😉
The StuG commander as already mentioned in Fieldgrey or pea dot..
I’m liking the camo pattern, looks very good. The quickshade will obviously darken it down so will you highlight before or after the quickshade? My normal approach is to shade first and then get the airbrush to put down a fine dusting of middlestone. Only needs to be a little and I usually apply it with the airbrush much further away from the model. Seems to tie the camo pattern and shading together while giving a ‘dusty’ look.
they are great looking a quick effective pattern is the guy on the gun wearing sailor socks?
Here is the primary thing with washes and quickshades: if you aren’t going to layer highlight after the wash/shade, you need to account for it in your color selection. Shading/washing will darken the whole mini, and reduce contrast. So, if you are just going to basecoat and then wash/dip, you need to alter your basecoat colors from the “textbook” colors to slightly brighter colors with higher contrast. This is so the post-wash minis, which is colored with paint+wash, ends up with the correct color/tone/brightness.
I used the quick shade method and was worried about the glossy finish at this stage, but the moment the matt varnish went down I was shocked how good it looked. I hope the camo pattern comes back through, because the fear is after all the hours cocktail stick dotting that you end up with a slightly dirty green or tan jacket. It might take longer, but I saw a nice video where once the initial base colour was down and dry it got a dry brush / highlight step and it gave the dotting on the higher areas in… Read more »
autofocus green on green John will have difficulty always, there is not enough contrast betwen colors.
I say paint it how you want, I’m looking forward to see how they come out after the matte coat and I’m also looking forward to how you choose to base everything. Are you going to try and put static grass on the helmets or the figure? Might be hard but might give a cool look. Also do you plan to use camo netting on the pak or the stu.
Just one thought, which may have been covered on previous comments… How are you getting the heavy howitzer onto the table as you do not appear to have a tow for it?
