Dont know about the quickshade.. hope you will show us what the difference will be after doing it and with weathering.. Again, love this kind of Vlogs..
Kevin Dallimore uses AP dip on all his 15mm vehicles
I’m really enjoying watching this project progress. I’m trying to ‘speed paint’ 50 Rider of Rohan and some of your techniques have been very informative for my project. My vote is to add a Quickshade layer. I’m sure the shading will have the desired effect but more improtantly from my perspective it adds durability. The Quickshade layer is properly tough and preserves the paint beneath it really well even under “heavy” gaming use.
quickshade for the win, shade and protect in one go jobs a good ‘un. Also happy hunting on the brush front, a trip to the pound shop is probably in order 😉
I’d certainly be keen to see how the quick shade turns out – would an alternative be a gloss varnish coat and a thinned oil wash? It could be a little more targeted – or is that just one extra step too many?
Definitely go with the quickshade
Glad @lloyd didn’t need to do more of his lego gutter tricks in the office.
I would like to also see how they end up with a quick shade dip. With that many flat surfaces I wonder how bad the pooling will be?
I would recomend the quickshade as well.
And for the antennas: I usually take left over pieces of sprues and heat them up over a candle and pull them to thin pieces (don’t know the right word). Once cooled down and glued in place they are quite robust.
Just in case you can’t find propper bristles…
fantastic work on the tanks John.
I think the quickshade could work but I would be worried about it pooling in the crew compartments on the tank destroyers and around the road wheels of the the tanks. You would really have to go in with a brush and mop up the excess. I would probably do a controlled panel line wash. But that would definitely take more time. I’ve also seen it where you gloss coat the vehicle and let that dry. Then spray an enamel wash through your airbrush, Let that sit for 15-20 minutes. Then buff the excess off with a clean cloth dipped… Read more »
I cant believe how much you have been getting done, it takes me a week just to get one tank done sometimes. I’m working some Afrika Korp tanks for flames and I only get one done each evening.
Are these fore bolt actions tank wars and what scale are these tanks ?
So many tanks, they’re going to look great on the gaming table. I snagged a box of chieftains a while back and I’m starting to get the urge to put them together and paint them up…
I’d be worried about the dip pooling and obliterating some of the detail. I have sprayed quick shade inks/washes before, moved it around with a damp brush to get it where I want it and then tidied it up with a bit of kitchen towel twisted into a wick to remove any pools that are too excessive. I tend to gloss coat first so I can move it about a bit easier but that’s a step that could be skipped. I normally gloss coat over the quick shade so that I can add weathering powders for a final flourish 🙂
Then Matt coat them down well mate, before little fingers get all over them!!!!!
Does the quickshade darken down the lighter tones, such as the dunkel gelb?
With quick shade I thinking works better to do your highlights first. The dip seems to blend everything together better when done like that in my experience
I was reading the Brigade Models Blog and they warn against using AP’s aerosol on the quick shade as in their experience it tends to blister and craze on flat surfaces
Not sure if others have had similar experiences ?
I think, since this is a fast paint series, that a quick shade is appropriate. I’m not a fan of dipping as it tends to be uncontrolled, but this is a quick paint vlog (albeit in 12 parts and going) so demonstrating the effects of a dip followed by a mat coat could show what can be done in short time. This will results in a better protected model, but be prepared to have some of your subtle shading fade away.
The dip is no more uncontrolled than washes or glazes its just another painting tool. and takes time to use it to its best effect
Never used Quickshade, so not sure how it would look, but i`m sure you`ll get or already have had lots of advice on the subject.
The project`s really coming along John, i did`t think the “Black and Green” would go together, but it has and it look`s great.
