March 20, 2015 by warzan
Warren and Justin sit down with Chez from Warlord Games for an interesting chat discussing the highlights of each of the armies found in Bolt Action.
Watch the XLBS Show
If you like the show, you can see even more by becoming a Backstage member and watching the XLBS version for even more gaming tips, in which Justin and Chez look into infantry size, big and small?
What's your favourite special rule for your army?
Keep it coming loving the tips etc
YESSS!!! Finally a Balls video!!!! 😀 😀 😀
Bolt
Action
Lock &
Loaded
Show, I totally get it now. Definitely more videos. This is becoming my favorite Beasts of War series.
I love BALLS!!!!
MOAR BALLS!!!
Wicked!!!!!!! Very excited with this series.
Warren, remember that Bolt Action is an infantry game. Those big, awesome tanks cost a lot of points and often times can’t win objectives. I’ll caveat that I’m a novice still, but I would steer clear of the bigger armor. I would look for something in the light to medium tank area with a turreted medium (or light/heavy if you want) anti-tank gun and a couple of machine guns or better yet a flamethrower. A regular version should keep you around 200 points. Which is 1/5 your army points, or as I like to think of it as 20 regular… Read more »
Good points!
Hi all great to see the bolt action show running. As a long time soviet player i would like to offer so hints. First never forget the nit one step back rule, it cam keep a damaged unit that would otherwise been routed alive and on an objective. While artillery in bolt action is not my favourite Gods of war can make russian artillery a good area denial tool. Enemy infantry closing on a objective…call a barrage down on it. You can take the green rule for your free squad most of the time for free, its a fun thing… Read more »
Fun little show
Another thing i would like to point out that a lot of players overlook is that especially in objective based games, the game is often won or lost in the assault. The reasons for this is objectives tend to be in buildings or cover. Secondly in bolt action its easy to lock down a squad once you get three or four pins your in trouble but its very hard to actually kill the squad especially if its in a building or cover and until the defending squad is gone you cant achieve the objectives. Typically a squad is in a… Read more »
Finally we’re off! Great start guys, looking forward to seeing where we go with this series 🙂 To add a few more general tips to @trolleyjockey ‘s list: – Don’t forget the campaign books! (Battleground Europe/Osfront). There are addition units in each book for your armies that can add some extra options / flavours. – Also look at the Theatre Selectors to add a bit more flavour to your list as opposed to a generic list. – As Chez mentioned in the video, 1500pt game seems to fill an evening very nicely. As I’ve said to some of the guys… Read more »
@oilliep i too have suffered at the hands of the cross eyed artillery observer. It can be a disaster but then again when it works it can be great. Honestly in general i think air observers are superior as they put down a lot of pins and damage their main target. Both are quite expensive, however the soviet gods of war rule does help a bit and it feels very russian.
For people who have never played bolt action but ate thinking of trying it the thing to remember is.
Bolt action doesn’t try to be a historically accurate simulation of the complexities of a wwii battlefield. If you want that there are lots of systems out there but bolt action isnt one.
What bolt action is a very fun, light game with a wwii theme. For me its one of the most fun games around especially if you don’t have tons of time to play.
Can you tell i love bolt action
I wager Warren has been calculating how many bomb-dogs he can pack into a 1000pt army…
Another special rule the US get as well as Fire & Manoeuver and the gyro stabalisers is Air Supperioity – The Air FAO can call in an airstrike twice per game as opposed to the usual once per game making literally doubling the ammount of damade they can deal.
Ok … so now feeling left out in the Pacific… c’mon what about the Japanese. ..lol
Still I have the start of my British army.. The 1 Battalion of the Royal Hampshire Regiment.
@warzan – I hope you do another Bolt Action boot camp, but (and this is something you should consider for other games too), you should think about players who’ve already got a bit of stuff. I’ve got the Bolt Action rulebook and several army books. If I’d been able to come this time, I’d have felt like I was wasting a sizable part of my ticket price. I presume you’re able to work out a deal with Warlord, so I wouldn’t expect a full RRP discount for not taking the books, but it would be nice if you could cater… Read more »
Great video. However, after some experience playing Germans I find the Hitler’s Buzzsaw rule not that very useful. I’ve had better success running a 10 man squad of Volksgrenadiers all armed with STG-44 assault rifles and recently finished another 10 man Volksgrenadier squad with STG-44 assault rifles.
Another good point to this game is his kind of arcade Flavor couse you can play usa vs french or britain.is histórical but allows you some flexivility and fight each other faction regardless his front or theater of opperations.
Next setp, complete my fallschirmjager force!
Great show !!!! This has tweaked my interest in WW2. Primarily my interests sit in the Napoleonic era, ACW, ECW, AWI, Ancients or Fantasy etc. However I am getting more and more tempted to try this period, just got to decide on an Army to choose now. So thanks again for emptying my wallet 😉
BALLS for the win! Yon can never go wrong with more BA! Bomb dogs are a lot of fun but I have stopped using them unless I am not fielding tanks. They prefer Soviet tanks that is just the way I roll 🙁 . I have just reached 1500 with my Soviets as they are my 6th BA force(US\GERMAN\USMC\JAPAN\UK). I really wish I had started them sooner as they are a lot of fun to play. I have been capping my forces at 2k standard for now. Once I finish the Soviets I want to consider some tank war forces… Read more »
Lots of good conversation but taking LMGs and lots of them can be a nasty surprise for the player taking them. I can tell you from other side of the pond…LMGs are not a good choice from a meta gamer and points economic perspective. We are trying to get more players to take them by rewarding historically themed armies and house ruling their cost. It’s a shame you have to consciously take them versus their inclusion being nature.
Excellent show, looking forward to the rest of this series.
Ok, I caught up with all the (3?) episodes 🙂 So, waiting for more.
