Z-Man Games Declare a State of Emergency for Pandemic
November 8, 2014 by dracs
Z-Man Games have announced that they will be coming out with another expansion for Pandemic, the game where you and your friends battle to stop the world being overrun by disease. Now things have gotten even harder as they declare a State of Emergency.
According to Z-Man Games' announcement, this expansion will bring us three new challenges to deal with in our games of Pandemic.
The Hinterlands Challenge
Where the diseases are spreading from animals to humans…The Emergency Events Challenge
Where unpredictable Events have nasty effects on the game…try to use Quarantines to stop the spread of disease across the board…The Superbug Challenge
Where a fifth disease that cannot be treated threatens the world! Produce vaccine doses after finding its cure in order to fight off this threat. You must eradicate the superbug disease to win. This is NOT for the faint of heart...
Pandemic is a constant favourite in our local board game group and its various expansions do help to mix the game up and prevent it getting stale. Pandemic: State of Emergency definitely promises to be a challenging addition to the game, perfect for both hardcore gamers and those just looking for something a little more difficult than usual. I have enough trouble beating this game, so it will be cool to see what developments these bring to the table.
Do you enjoy Pandemic? Will you add State of Emergency to your set?

Pandemic is a great game, but the recent explosion of expansions is getting ridiculous.
Actually this is the first expansion since In the Lab which was released last year afaik
The recent flurry of games are stand alone spin offs, which tbh don’t interest me at all.
But will wait and see what this is like.
I still haven’t played the previous expansions yet despite having had them for nearly a year! :/
Yeah, maybe it’s the spin offs that are making it seem like it’s being milked. Timing too: I just bought Contagion a couple of weeks ago, then saw the dice version and now this in the space of a few days.
I guess it’s good that companies try to add life to their games, but there are soooo many great board games these days that I really don’t have time to play any single one “to death” anyway. 🙂
It kind of makes sense for Z-Man
Pandemic was recently voted Number I in the recent Dicetower Top 100 People’s Choice list.
It has to be a lot less risky developing a popular franchise than gambling with a new title, and there is hopefully more chance of new titles being paid for by Pandemic sales.
Hopefully the gaming community gets a benefit from it.
There are TOO MANY good games these days! lol
Sadly as companies like fantasy flight have started to monitize every aspect of board games and shifted the model more towards magic the gathering away from stand alone board games we are going to see more and more “living” elements to games. For games like Pandemic that isn’t a problem as it started out as a stand alone game, so one can get the first game and maybe the first expansion and call it a day. I worry more about the new generation of games that are designed to be endlessly expanded (stuff like decent for example). I see people… Read more »
I have heard good things about Pandemic, but I can’t help but feel that it would be a little bit dark to play it at the moment, while a real world Ebola epidemic is killing thousands of people on the African subcontinent. Just a little too close to home for my gaming tastes I’m afraid.
Then again, every year the annual crop of new influenza strains kill even more people, and the world barely seems to notice.
I’ll try to stop being such a downer now.
I think the newer twist on the game is probably more problematic in that regard because the idea is for the contagion to win.
At least in Pandemic you are trying to stop the diseases and find cures.
But since my daughter decided that the cubes represent werewolves, vampires, zombies and gelatinous cubes, we don’t really have that problem! lol
I hear you mate.
I love pandemic, can’t wait to see the details of this game.
