Watching The Rugby? Get Down To Some Blood Bowl Too!
September 18, 2015 by brennon
If you're getting pumped for the start of the Rugby World Cup tonight (I know I am! Can't wait to see England Vs Fiji!) then how about mixing in some nerdery with the sports and cracking out your copy of Blood Bowl* as well!
The Living Rulebook
Thankfully you can still download the games Living Rulebook (LRB) through the Cyanide Games Forums which means if you can get together a few models and a pitch you could be playing without having to buy much.
The LRB contains all of the rules as well as the teams that were available as of 2010 and is still the official source for all things Blood Bowl despite it being left at the wayside by Games Workshop. I usually plump for Human or Dwarfs as my teams of choice in the game.
The Humans always had the right amount of flexibility in their choice of players. The Blitzers were tough, Catchers were nimble and Throwers could do a bit of everything and secure the ball. They also had the legendary Ogre big guy which was always fun.
Dwarfs on the other hand were a rolling ball of iron and muscle. Once you get that red ball into a cage you could shove forwards into practically anything and not move a muscle. Stand Firm became a favourite skill of choice for that very reason.
If you're looking for miniatures try Black Scorpion who do a great range of resin teams...
...and you can find a lot more over on their webstore where you can get to HERE.
The Digital Alternative
Of course if you can't get your hands on models to play the game you could always check out the digital alternatives. Cyanide have been keeping the game alive with both Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition which is currently on Steam and the much improved Blood Bowl II.
There is a free choice too if you don't fancy spending any money and prefer the tactical view without the fancy graphics. FUMBBL is an online java-based program which enables you to create leagues, play out tournaments and generally enjoy Blood Bowl in sprite form.
Time For A Tournament?
Considering the plethora of teams in the tournament, the real World Cup I mean, how about setting up a league using these Fantasy Teams and then playing out your own version of it on the tabletop?
All you have to do is name your players according to the countries players and you're sorted...
- England - Humans (Versatile)
- Scotland - Norse (Heavy Hitters, Lack Of Defence)
- Wales - Elves (Quick and Agile)
- Ireland - Orcs (Tough, Still Quite Versatile, Quick Try Scorers - Goblins!)
Those are just the home nations of course and I'm sure that you'd have a few things to say on why your own team fits the bill better than my own thoughts.
If you think differently let me know in the comments below and tell me what you think the other teams in the World Cup would be.
Are New Zealand the Wood Elves? They are certainly quick but maybe they deserve a bit more staying power so they could be Chaos All Stars or High Elves?
*I am aware Blood Bowl is more American Football than Rugby but just go with it!
What do you think; a neat idea to combine two loves?

I was a big fan of the original Blood Bowl, I recently unearthed my original Dwarf and Skaven teams, good memories.
From what I can tell, Blood Bowl II will use the (now controversial) “Plasmoid’s Narrowing the Tiers” format.
As I understand it, Plasmoid was on the rules committee when GW disbanded it, and had a few ideas that would likely have made it into the next incarnation of the Living Rule Book.
Blood Bowl is the best game GW ever made, and is definitely among my favorite games to play of all time.
I’m with you @odinsgrandson Blood Bowl is my favorite as well. It works great as a weekend tournament type game. I also find it to be a more fun game to paint than some other games because you want to give little personal flourishes to each model. On neat difference of the computer game from the board game is that because there are no models to buy, you see a proliferation of new strategies that come from not needing to purchase models. Many teams online will forego specialty players like catchers or throwers and focus on the grittier players. When… Read more »
BB is a fantastic game and a great pity that it got left by the wayside. Version 1 of the computer game was a perfect copy of the board game and very easy to get into. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on BB2 and would highly recommend both the board and computer version of the game to anyone who fancies a light hearted but actually quite complex sports game.
Blood Bowl, has been kept alive by the players for so many years. Played at my club the Kentish Rogues with commitment and excitement. Great that companies are continuing to make great mini’s. And a big thank you to GW for developing the game and allowing it to continue. They have been getting a load of shit lately, let’s it forget how awesome they actually are. That’s coming from a die hard only play CB Infinity gamer. I have just swapped a Yu Jing Starter Army for a 80/90s undead BB team. The miniatures still look great, vintage….love it.
Wales are not the pansy elves!
Oh, the shame of it…
I’m playing blood bowl on my PlayStation Vita at the moment fantastic game.
when I cleared out my painting table of all my backlog I’ll pick up a black scorpion team.
they Look fun to paint undead and Chaos dwarves were my favorites 🙂
In the pub Guinness in hand ready for the Ireland game… lucky its not Vs England or I rethink wearing my Ireland jersey,..
I blame BoW for me love for Ireland of course
Go on my boy!
Get it down yet neck 😉
And we love you too Dave! 🙂
Well getting down my neck has never been a problem…
Just hope Sexton can show what class he has like in the 6 nations last few games he and O’Connell need to pick up the slack.
Fingers crossed, I hope Canada come out fists at the ready. It’s going to be brutal, time for another pint I think.
It’s good to hear you guys love me hahahaha
Thinking on it as Ireland are smashing the Canadians, the thing I miss from Ireland is Smithwicks, there is a great half and half Guinness and Smithwicks that you can get in certain pubs in Ireland… I can’t find it sold over here which is a shame
If anyone ever gets to Ireland I strongly suggest you give it a try (rugby joke too)
Never heard of it to be honest
To each their own, I love them both, but I rather have a half pint of each, than a mixed one
