Wage Wallpaper War In Papering Duel

Don't you hate it when you're trying to decorate a room, and your roommate keeps wallpapering over your work with her own designs? What do you mean far-fetched premise for a game?! Tell me again about your space Orks...
Okay, so the narrative concept of Papering Duel may be a little 'out-there' but the game is actually strategically interesting and very aesthetically pleasing.
Each player is dealt cards which have a 3x3 pattern, with some of those squares being transparent. On their turn, a payer may play 1-3 cards on top of the existing pile to create a 'style' of wallpaper; that is, a continuous column, row, or diagonal consisting of three pattern squares.
Players win by creating three 'styles' on their turn and lose if they cannot create a style. If only one or two styles are created, the player draws from the deck to refill your hand. Similarly, if a competing player cannot undo your style of wallpaper on their turn, then they have conceded that you are the superior interior designer. Take that, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.
This may seem like a really simple and, in some ways, cutesy game, however, this is a strategically tense mechanic which can be won or lost through a few silly moves. Think noughts and crosses, but your opponent is constantly writing over the marks you have placed. It's intense and engaging and everything I want in a tiny, two-player game.
Papering Duel will be showcasing at Essen this weekend, and I will be begging the boys to bring me back a copy.

Ok well it is certainly different, I cant help feeling that the mechanic seems interesting and fun, but the theme is not much more interesting than watching paint dry.
