It's time to reclaim the natural world from the toxicity of human endeavor - by any means necessary.
In Viroid, you are a pathogen working to decimate the human population currently destroying the planet. Exterminate cities, infect populations and exact a death toll which will reset the imbalance between nature and humanity, and save the world.
In this merciless game, you take the role of germs and your common goal is to extinguish the human species completely. For that purpose, you will infect big sections of population before your genetic profile changes and unpleasant side effects take place. You may choose from different symptoms at hand to mix a very special germ-cocktail.
Viroid is a co-operative board and card game which operates in five phases (0-4); pathogen development, draw event, infection, mutation, and mortality.
The game is won or lost in phase 4. Players win if they have sufficiently destroyed the human population and infected every major city population, or lose if 2 of the players (in a 3-4 player game) do not have any infected tokens on the board.
Players can also lose immediately if a research and remedy token share the same space, or if the phase one event cards have all been drawn.
The game is also divided into three difficulties; - simple, normal, and demanding. Furthermore, different pathogen cards also provide levels of added complexity (the rulebook suggests using the basic 'Bacteria' card deck for beginner players).
I like the concept of this game. It feels a bit complicated for new players but, I imagine after a few playthroughs, even the most hesitant board game newbie would enjoy this.
Plus the different levels of difficulty provide a game which has replayability and options for those of us who like to test our gaming limits.
The components are handmade, and this will be a limited run, with only 200 copies available. Viroid is currently available for pre-order on OSTIA Spiele's website, for delivery at Essen in October.

I don’t see the point of ‘limited run’ games. Special editions yes, but a limited run seems to indicate a poor game. If the game is good then why not sell as many as you can? Buyer beware.
