Vampires! Soulblight Gravelords & More Coming To Age Of Sigmar
March 22, 2021 by brennon
Games Workshop delivered another of their big previews this past weekend for a range of their games. The first game covered was Warhammer Age Of Sigmar and the new army for the Grand Alliance Of Death. The Soulblight Gravelords are on the march/shuffle!

The Soulblight Gravelords (despite having a super trademarkable name) are your classic Vampire Counts from The Old World but given a Mortal Realms glam-up. Vampires are at the heart of the army and feature as part of its elite wing too. The Blood Knights are the update to your classic Blood Dragon Vampires that you might remember from The World That Was for example.
With each of them being a blood-sucker in their own right, they will no doubt be very hard-hitting cavalry on the tabletop. As they should be. These fanged-horrors go hand-in-hand with the other Soulblight Vampires we've seen in previous previews to give you the true "aristocracy of the night" vibe.
The Quiet Legions
In addition to the new vampires, the Soulblight Gravelords also get some very nice new undead to call on. Deathrattle Skeletons will make up the core of your force and can be armed with hand weapons or spears alongside their rusted shields.

I think that the design team has managed to skirt the line here and avoid covering everything in bat wings whilst still retaining a lot of that "grimdark" in their look. They actually look like they'd be able to have you in a fight too which is always nice to see.
The classic zombies have also got an update with the Deadwalker Zombies now forming the basis of your shambling horde.

These aren't quite as over-the-top when compared to the Zombies in Cursed City which I'm sure people will be very happy with. There is also a nice mix of both male and female miniatures in the set giving you the real feel of a populace who has been dragged from their graves.
Given that we mentioned Cursed City, it would be pretty easy to mix and match these miniatures with those from the new Warhammer Quest game. You could perhaps make an army that originated from there!
Another of the very, very old model kits from the Vampire Counts has also been updated. New Fell Bats are swooping in from on high to drag you off into the shadows.
Fell Bats // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar
These are apparently bigger than their older brothers and sisters and are designed to build on the sense of dread when facing the army. When the bat flying towards you is bigger than a mortal man I think it certainly builds on the spook factor.
All of these new miniatures and more will be featured in the new Soulblight Gravelords Battletome.

I was going to say that I hope this sees the light of day soon but you probably want to avoid that if you're a vampire. I am certainly liking pretty much everything that Games Workshop has put out for these blood-suckers at the moment and I could see a lot of people being drawn to them as a force.
Warhammer Underworlds Preview
Approaching death from a different angle, we also have the crafted might of Kainan's Reapers coming to Warhammer Underworlds.
Kainan's Reapers // Warhammer Underworlds
As a devoted servant of Nagash, Kainan and his followers are going to be stepping into the breach to secure the Direchasm for their terrible master. It's neat to see more of these bone-formed warriors hitting the tabletop, a dark reflection of the Stormcast Eternals. Once again, they give you a good chance to dive in and paint up a portion of a faction rather than having to dive in headfirst.
Video Previews
If you're interested in the videos that the team showed throughout the livestream then you can catch them below.

One of the most interesting teasers was perhaps the shortest. This video hints at a new Broken Realms book which will follow on from Be'lakor's...
Broken Realms – A God Awakens // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar
It certainly gave the initial impression of being focused on the Beastmen and hordes of Gors that rampage across The Mortal Realms but I'm not so sure. The likelihood is that this is going to be a new Kurnothi character, perhaps even Kurnoth himself. He was previously slain by the armies of Horticulous Slimux so I would guess he is out for revenge!
I would certainly be up for seeing the Kurnothi given a new lease of life as a part of the Sylvaneth army in Age Of Sigmar.
What do you make of all these previews?

If the gravestones-on-zombies are optional this batch of Vampire (double checks for typos) Counts is flawless. Cracking minis!
I really like the new vapire stuff, but I’m not so sure on the skeleton heads of the Blood Knight horses, the old ones didn’t have that and I think they looked better.
Great looking stuff all around. I like most those Blood Knights that are clear improvement to old ones and hopefully aren’t over prized like those old ones.
Ooh Mostly great looking figures except the stoner zombies. the giant bats are fabulous looking I think anyway.
Looks like they are “retiring” the old Skeleton Warriors as well, so if your planning on finishing up any units you better get your ordering in quick.

For all those who got bent out of shape with the Ossiarchs, it’s nice to see that classical undead still exist in the AoS continuity, with just the right amount of insanity and simplicity. The zombies are by far the most welcome, as the old zombies kit needed some SERIOUS updating.
I agree, ANYTHING is better than the current Zombies from GW (wasn’t this the very first set of multi-pose plastic “regiments” that GW released?). Looks like two of then still have the awful “shish kebab” pose (with gravestone somehow attached to coffin lid defying all attempts of logic and gravity), but I wonder if we could get away with cutting them off and repairing the damage with greenstuff (ok they are going to look like they are fixated with something on the ground (or fighting with a halfling) but thats still going to look better).
Is it me, or do the Blood Knights look like they are carrying giant furled umbrellas? And on undead unicorns too. Brave design choice!
I have admit I like the rat prince, and kudos to GW for finally revamping the zombies. How many billion years old was the old zombie kit?
They’ve based the style of off of late 15th/early 16th century lances but not mirrored the bottom half in the same way. I see what you mean though but they’re damn fine figures.
Certainly the first AoS range I can see myself picking everything up from for Oldhammer. Great, great stuff.
