Armies collide. Might, manipulation, and just a little luck will ultimately decide who takes the throne! Gather your dice for a trick-taking game of throws!

Thrown is a battle-themed trick-taking game using dice rather than cards, with suits represented by four different dice colours. On a turn, the lead player rolls 1-3 dice of a suit. Other players then try to roll the highest number in the same suit.

If a player does not have the correct coloured dice to roll, they can instead try to roll for trump; that is, a natural six on a dice of any colour. If a player rolls a six off-suit, that trump dice will beat all in-suit values.

Rounds played are equal to the number of players in the game. Won tricks are converted into gold, and the player with the most gold at the end of the game wins!

There are also cards which can influence the state of play through special abilities such as flipping, removing and re-rolling dice. Players must decide the most tactical way to utilize these powers if they wish to earn their gold and claim the throne!

I have to admit, I was originally underwhelmed by Thrown. After all, if I want to play a trump game, there are plenty to choose from that simply require a standard card deck. However, Thrown offers a new thematic packaging for trick-taking games, along with special ability cards which keep the game interesting.

If you want to battle for glory, Thrown will be released in early 2019 and can currently be pre-ordered through the PHD website.
