The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim The Adventure Game Hits Gamefound!
November 3, 2021 by fcostin
As players explore the world of Tamriel over at Modiphius Entertainment, Elder Scrolls: Call to Arms may be the closest we can get to The Elder Scrolls universe here on the tabletop. However, the most popular video game of the franchise, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is now up on Gamefound, working as a cooperative Adventure Board Game experience.

Teased a few months back that the popular Skyrim title was heading over to the tabletop, the game is now up and already funded on GameFound - in a matter of 28 minutes!

Entering the arena in 2022, the board game follows a different approach to the suspected main storyline, for 1-4 players to explore:
“Before the Dragonborn came to Skyrim... You are surviving members of the Blades, a legendary group who long protected the Empire of Tamriel! Abandoned by the empire, you must work together to thwart a plot which threatens the whole of Skyrim.”
Where does that take us gamers who have already played through the 'Skyrim experience' digitally? The first campaign that players are thrown into, will be interesting for both players both new and aged in Tamriel. Placing players 25 years before Skyrim, and watching the world evolve through the integration of the Dragonborn as each campaign is unlocked.
Gameplay Setup // The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim The Adventure Game
If you have input into any of the games that exist within The Elder Scrolls universe, you'll know that this will be no quick feat! Each session is expected to last roughly 90-120 minutes - depending on how many adventurers you are parting with - equating to countless hours worth of cooperative gameplay.
Along with immersing themselves in backstory and content, players will get their say on the choices they make by equipping themselves with a particular set of skills to progress - meaning six different familiar races: Altmer, Dunmer, Imperial, Khajiit, Nord, and Orsimer to create and build a completely unique character with to weave into the story of the game.

Customising characters will come with equipment choices too! Meaning that you can slash your way in with an Iron Dagger, Iron Sword and a decent enough Hide Armour if that is what you choose, however, there are a huge pool of equipment cards to grow the strength of your chosen character as the story progresses. Did somebody say loot?
There will be high-quality components coming out of your bandoliers and pouches, with the base game box containing a wide array of cards, tokens, miniatures, dice and various other necessary components. There are still 2 stretch goals to be added to the mix, with more components and upgrades. Along with several social goals over on various Modiphus social channels.

There is a future ahead for the game system. With From The Ashes and Dawnguard Expansions expansions available too. Taking players deeper into a familiar campaign, taking down a mighty dragon, more chapters and playable heroes.
If you are concerned about another huge video game IP being translated over to a board game, I tend to have the same bugbear. However, Modipihus Entertainment has a long-standing relationship with The Elder Scrolls Franchise, given their work with Elder Scrolls: Call To Arms miniatures game.
The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim // Bethesda Softworks
My biggest concern with large video game IPs are merely the same experience just translated over to a tabletop scenario - no new experience as such - the same story regurgitated onto a different platform.
However, what does indeed make my eyes glisten looking at The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim The Adventure Game is that it adds story and content further past the initial release. Growing the game world in a different format. Rewarding long-standing fans with new content to explore on a different medium. I am certainly interested in seeing the world prior (but not too far from) the events in Skyrim the video game.
Board & Components // The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim The Adventure Game Gamefound Campaign
There are a few different pledges you can take on the Gamefound page, all appealing to a different kind of player. Whether you are looking for just the base game or looking to immerse yourself fully into all expansions and upgrades - there will be a choice for you. Starting at £68 for the base game, all the way up to the Deluxe at £220.
There are still 32 days left on the clock, so you do have plenty of time to ponder if you are interested. You should especially head over to the campaign page if you are pondering indeed, as you will have access to the rulebook to download for free. So have a gander, and see if you can mould with the mechanics, and have a cheeky preview of a game scenario.
What are your views on the Skyrim board game? Are you tempted by the new content?

I would be tempted if the “complete package” wouldn’t be so ludicrously expensive. And 380+ tokens… and the minis, as far as I can tell, don’t work with the Skyrim miniature game…
Let’s see how far this goes…
Indeed at least some of the minis are one-piece versions of the existing Elder Scrolls product line. And I also agree that the deluxe pledge is scary expensive. I can wait for retail on this one.
That’s odd. I did ask Modiphius on Twitter:
“Hello @Modiphius I can’t find this information anywhere: the minis with your new Skyrim boardgame: are they the same size/scale as with your miniature game or are they a lot smaller?”
And they answered:
“Yes they are the same scale :)”
So if you bring a boardgame to market that fits your miniature game… wouldn’t that be a big marketing point to slap on your campaign? (And maybe @brennon or @fcostin can add this information to the article as I feel it is an important piece of information)
Good point, I am backing and will ask and see if they give an answer in the comments.
With any IP-related item be it a game or merch, you are paying a license fee that is buried in the cost of the package.
i love the viking look to the game figures.
