As part of the preview of their 2019 releases, IELLO Games have developed a game which combines card drafting, tetromino placement, and roll-and-write mechanics to bring strategic tile-placement to the tabletop.

Topa Topa is a Tetris-style roll-and-write game. On their turn, a player drafts a card from their neighbour. This card shows the tetromino shape which the player then writes on their individual player board.

Each game lasts three rounds, and rounds are scored based on levels completed, shapes used and special conditions. There are also coins, which allow a player to manipulate the rules surrounding drafting and drawing their tetromino shapes.

There has been a recent resurgence in popularity for both tabletop Tetris-style games and roll-and-write gaming. However, as I said when I reported on Brikks and Arraial, I just don't see the appeal of Tetris outside of the digital world. And with the sheer amount of tetromino tabletop releases this year, I'm starting to feel like I must be missing something which makes them so appealing.

Topa Topa was only showing as a prototype demonstration at Essen, and isn't due for release until 2019. However, if unlike my cynical soul, you find the idea of tetromino roll-and-writes appealing, you can keep up to date with Topa Topa through the IELLO website.

What is your opinion of tabletop tetromino games? Let us know!
