Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pop Up In Kickstarter Board Game
February 3, 2016 by brennon
It seems like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles aren't just fighting back on game consoles in the digital realm but also on the tabletop. IDW Games have taken to Kickstarter to fund their Shadows Of The Past Board Game featuring the pizza-loving foursome...
Kevin Wilson is behind this game so that's a good sign to begin with. He's worked on Game of Thrones, Civilization and Descent to name a few of his projects under Fantasy Flight Games' label. Here he has produced a 2-5 player story driven adventure game where you take on the forces of the evil Master Shredder.
The game is based on the ongoing comic book world of TMNT and features artwork and therefore models based on that design. The Turtles are looking great, you can see Leonardo above and Shredder below.
I'm not so impressed with the Shredder model here but otherwise they look good. As well as these key characters you'll get a mass of Foot Clan Ninjas to battle as the Turtles plus additional villains and allies. It looks like future stretch goals might replace the card counters for some characters with proper models too.
A gameplay video is coming soon so I will be looking out for that to see how it plays. Mechanically I'm sure that Wilson will be quite sound but it's always good to check when it comes to games like this. It appears as a lot of the co-operative action is dice driven with the ability to share dice between players at the beginning of a round. Sounds like there will be plenty of teamwork involved.
It's known that this is a one versus many type game though so I don't you'll have much in the way of an A.I deck to play with which could be a shame. Although, getting to play as Shredder should be fun. Sometime's its good to be bad...
What do you think as this campaign gathers motion?

Nothing seriously nothing I am sorry I just don’t think some things are worthy of the space on the site. I am so sorry but this is possibly a great kids game and the kids are the hobbies future. However I don’t see it’s place here. I don’t play the board games and I am sure someone may well say otherwise and prove me wrong I just have difficulty accepting a level and then below that is a definite no and this fits for me in the no zone. No offence to anyone else, these are my thoughts on it.… Read more »
I accept your apology, Chris lol. One of our group is a mad keen TMNT fan. He’s a few years younger than me and the cartoon was at the right time for him. The comic, which this looks like it’s based on, is more my time, and I both read it and played the rpg. It wasn’t aimed at kids like the subsequent cartoon and movies, but was a parody of the dark and gritty superhero books of the time, particularly Frank Miller’s Daredevil run. Their origin story even takes place in the background to Daredevil’s. All that aside, once… Read more »
Im not taking offense of course, but how do you come to the conclusion a turtles game has less place here than any other board game based on imaginary heroes/characters? It struck me as not making much sense tbh.
This project is as valid and relevant as making a board game based on a 30 year old movie which flopped so hard at the box office that its creator retired from film afterwards. I’m referring to Labyrinth. This project is for a board game featuring miniatures based on a comic book property that has been around since the 1980’s and adapted into a broad range of media. It holds significant nostalgia value to many adults who grew up with its earlier incarnations, plus it is enjoyed by children today. I just don’t understand how it is unworthy to be… Read more »
That has to be the lamest KS video I have seen …… “its gonna be cool …… its cool…… there’s lots of cool stuff coming….. cool….” and so on.
It really doesn’t tell you much about the game does it? Hopefully they get onto explaining those small details like how it plays at some point!
Love to see the TMNT figures on a batman game board…. I watched watching the cartoon last year, and love it…. age 46…..don`t tell anyone
I made some TMNT figures out of the ones that came with a cheap board game last year (had to customize weapons for them), but have had fun playing games with them using Fistful of Kung Fu rules. The Veer-myn rat coach is my Splinter and they look good on the table.
I’ll be watching this one because I like the Turtles and hope the figures are decent.
I don’t ever remember Wendy? having weapons.
April not Wendy. Oops
In TMNT Adventures from Archie Comics and in cartoons since 2003 she has been trained to fight and her weapon depends from version. She mostly has had Katana but in newest version she has metal fan as her weapon that was originally meant for Splinter’s daughter.
thanks.
Also in the animated movie that came out a few years back, she was a trained fighter that used a katana.
Cannot pledge until any kind of gameplay is shown. Should be the first thing included for any board game pitch.
I think this is good, as per redbens post elsewhere from the sands of time with an attached article, more diversity and creativity, even with a license, is good.
