Steamforged Games are getting hyped up and ready for the release of Elden Ring: The Board Game on Kickstarter on 22nd November. A new teaser trailer dropped recently showing off a little bit of what you've got to look forward to.

As well as that sneak peek at the gameplay, Steamforged has also been talking more about combat and what awaits the Tarnished as they explore Limgrave and come face-to-face with some deadly foes on the road.
Astrologer // Elden Ring: The Board Game
When you meet a foe in Elden Ring: The Board Game and find yourself drawn into combat, the focus shifts from the map tiles that you've been exploring to the Quest Book which will feature maps that you can play out your clashes on.
The Quest Book // Elden Ring: The Board Game
This is set out alongside the main map tiles and you will actually play out your combat in sequence with the other players who might still be exploring the map. So, it means that gameplay doesn't have to halt whilst one or two players dive into big combats on the tabletop.
During a fight on one of those Quest Book maps, players will adopt one of three stances based on where they are situated. You might want to shift into an aggressive stance where you do more damage to the enemy or a neutral stance where you can adjust where you act in the initiative order and take that calm, methodical approach to combat that the Soulsborne games are well known for.
Beastman Of Farum Azula // Elden Ring: The Board Game
There is also the chance to take a defensive stance where you'll draw more cards, recover stamina faster and get to plan ahead for the next turn. Your foes are also going to be taking advantage of the battle stances that you use but you can also use this for your own gain. Make an enemy overcommit and use the opening left by them to break through their open guard.
Godrick Knight // Elden Ring: The Board Game
As well as delving into the ins and outs of encounters in a more general sense, the folks at Steamforged have delved deeper into the mechanics of combat with another of their designer diaries. In this one, they explore the way that the nuts and bolts of combat works.
Grafted Scion // Elden Ring: The Board Game
Players will have access to a number of different decks that can all be tweaked and changed depending on the way they want to approach combat. The attack deck features all of the elements that help you utterly wreck your foes whilst the effect deck bolsters your attacks and helps you in defence when a monster hits you. All of these can be updated as you explore more of Elden Ring and gain experience from your many adventures.
Erdtree Avatar // Elden Ring: The Board Game
Another element of combat that most Soulsborne players will be familiar with is the way in which stamina affects what you can do. You can't just go wailing in and hope that you get out the other side without a scratch. You'll have to balance your attacks and the stances that I mentioned before. It seems like Steamforged has really, really gone deep into the mechanics of how Elden Ring: The Board Game plays out and there seems to be plenty of intricacies to get your head around when it comes to combat and the way you solve these big, monolithic problems.
Tree Sentinel // Elden Ring: The Board Game
I am certainly intrigued to see more of Elden Ring: The Board Game in play. Elden Ring is the first of the FromSoftware games that I properly dived into and had fun with and it seems like the board game is managing to capture a lot of what made the game fun. It helps that the miniatures are also looking fantastic from what we've seen of the renders.
You can read both of their recent designer diaries in more detail HERE and HERE to get the full lowdown on gameplay.

Those are lovely looking sculpts.
Wow! Amazing looking minis!
Fabulous looking detailed game figures.
I do hope they give the Erdtree Avatar the exact same moves as the Asylum Demon from their Dark Souls board game, since in Elden Ring they both share the same moves. It’d be a nice homage.
