If you're interested in the new Battletech game from Catalyst Game Labs, but you're put off by the plastic miniatures, then why not take a look Ironwind Metal's new starter boxes for the game.
Having reviewed the boxed set, I can tell you these metal miniatures are a good deal better than the basic plastic laying pieces int he box, and I while the game is great, I would definately go with some proper, painted metal minis to really showe it off to its fullest.

Considering the prices of individual mechs those starters are pretty good value for money. It’s just a shame it’s such a pain getting new Iron Wind stuff in the UK.
Saying that, the Battletech 25th Anniversary Edition boxed set comes with 26 mech models.
I’ve filmed a reveiw of it that should be up next week… but just sneaky heads up… metal minis for battletech are where it’s at.
I can’t wait for the video Andy! 🙂
Hopefully this will be just the start to a lot of Battletech coverage from BoW.

Not sure if they are Iron Wind or not, but Ral Partha Europe sell BT models:

They are in Liverpool
It should be noted that these are in fact of smaller scale than the rest of the BT line.
according to the blog on TGN these starter sets are for battleforce which miniatures are a smaller scale to standard battletech ‘darn it’.
Exactely what got me intrigued in these … 🙂 Useful for Future War Commander, if the info that they’re about 6mm is correct …
Shoot, well, that explains it. I guess the slightly wonky plastic mechs from my 25th anniversary introductory set will have to suffice for now!
I still have a Battletech box from FASA, That I never got to play (with the rules) becouse its in Japanese =S.
You kids, complaining about the plastic miniatures in the starter box. Back in my day we had cardboard pieces in plastic stands in our starter boxes, and we liked it fine that way!
Back in my day I had to walk uphill to school … both ways … 🙂 However, that doesn’t change the fact that most of the BT sculpts are getting dated. If not in casting quality than certainly in sculpts themselves. Especially if you compare the originals to the OOP MechWarrior clix. If you dig the style great, but one (if not best) example would be how “anorexic” and “wonky” the classic Centurion looks next to the clixy one.
As a person who got into battle-tech back when the last starter box was new I have to agree that the plastics in the box set aren’t great but they get you onto the table fast. The metal minis are where it is at. But its still awesome that you can field 2 full companies of mechs right out of the starter-box. These metal starters look good too. I am not a fan of most of the clan stuff so I personally would grab starter box 1.
Firestarter, Kodiak, Panther, Spider and Cyclops also come to mind, but I think you get the point.
I just got some metal minis yesterday, and I think my Zeus-X and Battlemaster especially are very cool.
I think these are pretty good value. Even the smaller scale isn’t really a problem when your playing only mechs vs. mechs games. Sadly I can’t combine these with my excisting mechs 🙂
