Smuggle & Adventure In FFG’s Star Wars: Outer Rim
February 11, 2019 by brennon
Embrace life on the edge of the galaxy in Star Wars: Outer Rim from Fantasy Flight Games, a new board game coming in the near future from the team where you get to play as iconic characters on both sides of the divide between the Empire & Rebellion.
In Star Wars: Outer Rim you get to play as characters like Han Solo, Lando Calrissian and Boba Fett and Doctor Aphra, each out to complete missions, jobs and bounties whilst also evading the various factions that would be out to stop them in their tracks.
There are definite shades of Merchants & Marauders and Firefly: The Board Game in this as you venture from planet to planet, unveiling encounter cards and building up a story as you work towards your end goal.
Many of the encounters you'll get mixed up in on your travels will challenge your skills and maybe shift the balance of power between the Rebellion and the Empire as well as forces like the shadowy Hutts and their criminal empire.
You can fight against one or all of them if you wish, giving you certain privileges but also potentially opening you up to being hunted by the others!
Each character has their own personal goal which they are aiming to complete which allows you to flip your character to their more experienced side, no doubt leading towards an end game scenario. Your ship can also upgrade and grow with you, being flipped to reveal a more powerful set of options and actions too.
What do you think?

I somehow fail to see this a fun game. Maybe it because I’m not a native English speaker or because I haven’t played any similar games… I think this is a pass for me
Lots of folks are lovers of Merchants & Marauders especially…it’s a bit of a slow game but it’s very much the whole ‘be a pirate’ game. This is effectively the ‘be a smuggler’ game.
I may give it a try but that would be definitely before I buy. And anyone knowing my Star Wars collections knows that this is a “bad omen” 😉
may be interesting fighting/trading with the space slugs (Hutt).
I would prefer an element of character creation in a game like this, so you can flesh out their story. From what I can make out, one plays as a named character that exists in the universe already. If I’m right, this makes it an “alternative” history game as the results could conflict with what actually happened. (Yeah, I know it is a fictional world.)
Strangely enough, I’m okay playing Rebellion. It’s probably because one isn’t playing as a character in the game. Even the Emperor is a character in the game which doesn’t represent the player.
The planet board doesn’t really look as good as Firefly’s but playing as Boba would be great.
