SITREP PODCAST: Talking Wargaming! The Drill Sergeant Rant!
August 12, 2019 by stvitusdancern
We were live! This is the recorded broadcast. We are diving into so much stuff today and at one point "G" goes on the Drill Sergeant rant! Careful might be some strong language today.
Don't forget about Jim's upcoming episode of Ops Center this coming Friday!
We are also talking about some of the hottest news in modern gaming and what really gets our goat when it comes to faux pas in gaming.
What gets you fired up?
Com’s down? @oriskany
I’ll ask Gianna about this. This is supposed to be our podcast.

Nice.
Fixed!
Epic! Now we can hear the rant! 🙂 🙂 🙂
There are many superheroes in the Marvel universe, the DC universe and what not. However, learning how much time, effort, sweat @oriskany spends on all things hobby/history/wargaming/producing/writing I must say there is also a superhero on OTT. There is a “normal” set containing modern vehicles and obstacles in plastic by Mantic Games. There are two (damaged) limousines and two (damaged) pick-ups. I think they look good and they´re fun to paint. The obstacles are linear obstacles. The Sarissa helicopter comes as a single model and also a part of a M.A.S.H. set. This set includes a free motor-cyclist, I think… Read more »
Thanks for the kind words, @jemmy . 😀 Using WW2 models for INFANTRY in Korea wouldn’t be a very far stretch. Vietnam is a very, very different matter. Thompsons were starting to be phased out before Korea, people were moving to battle rifles, assault rifles, etc. For the Americans you’re looking at the M1 selective fire Carbine often filling the void where Thompsons used to be. Would people still have Thompsons in Korea? Maybe. I don’t know why. It would be a break in military regulations. It’s also a drastically inferior weapon, firing .45ACP instead of .30cal carbine round with… Read more »
…and I bet he looked none of it up!
In all honesty and with full disclosure, I did look up the weight of the Thompson. I suspected it was heavier than the M-16A1 / CAR-15, but wanted to be sure. 😀
The BA Korea book seems to have some very odd things in it… not sure where they got some of their info from. As for Thompsons in Vietnam, used quite a bit actually. As @oriskany states large stocks of them, mainly in the ARVN armouries as they didn’t tend to issue them. The Marines at Hue used the ARVN armoury their and you see Thompsons and Grease Guns in the urban fighting as well as M14s, M1s, and various other kit in use. Among more specialist units the selection is even more varied. I have a bunch of pics of… Read more »
Grease guns and PIATs? FFS, how desperate did that battle get? 😮 M14s, sure. Lots of Marines were trained /rated in that weapon and distrust of the M16/M16A1 was still high. Marines raiding an ARVN armory in Hue … okay, gotcha. That explains the photo @grimwolfuk and @stvitusdancern found. Makes sense during the beginning of the battle, before Task Force X-Ray gets in there (2/5 Marines, 3rd Marine Tank Battalion, etc). I think some of the Marines initially in Hue when the Tet Offensive hit were with the MACV offices and headquarters, so yes … would have been badly under… Read more »
I don’t understand it either and some Australian’s were doing the same thing in Afghanistan in 2007.

You know the rules of wargaming. If there’s a single picture of it then you can make an entire platoon with Stalhelm’s and MP40’s. 😀
If there’s a single picture of it then you can make an entire platoon …
Indeed, @elessar2590 – because Google Images = Research. 😐
You are not wrong…the guy is legendary. The again, he is a US Marine.
Very kind words, @unclejimmy . 😀
Good episode!
I imagine that Hollywood has made many a Drill Sergeant scream outload.
I was never even a drill instructor (not even close) and “historical” movies just depress me. I don’t even watch them anymore. 🙁
What about ‘Battle: Los Angeles’? I would play some of those battles in 20mm if I could get some decent ‘aliens’.
See, movies like Battle: Los Angeles almost get a pass from me. They’e not going for a historical or real-world vibe. Movies like that aren’t cloaking themselves in historical pretense like Saving Private Ryan or being deliberately offensive like Inglorius Basterds or Overlord (or the latest Battlefield WW2 video game releases). Battle: Los Angeles was someone who’d seen Blackhawk Down one too many times and thought: “How can we put that into an American city?” That said, Battle: Los Angeles has a number of disastrous flaws if you stop and think about it too hard. Advanced aliens that can travel… Read more »
great podcast guys, the production line for painting is a great process also as you finish the last the first is dry for the next colour to go on. Jim have you seen a show could the tribe about kids surviving after a plague kills all the adult’s I think which was quite good.
So interesting game to be played, wish I knew my stuff as well as you do.
Get your nose into all the books you can find, join the army, write 100 articles, build 10000 models, and paint a million minis. Do that and you will be a bit closer! Report back ASAP.
I like to think I am pretty clued-up on all this WW2/Modern gaming stuff and I am, but not compared to @oriskany. He is one of a kind. However, on OTT there are a few more I could name who could make professional historians look like chumps. Hi @piers.
Thanks again, @unclejimmy – indeed @piers is one of the top-tier guys on the site. I would add @elessar2590 for Napoleonics and Victorian Age, @A27cromwell for tanks, @redben for ancients, @stvitusdancern for ultra-modern Special Forces, @ecclesiastes for naval combat, and @avernos for Dark Ages/Medieval, @damon for Arab-Israeli Wars, etc.

Enjoyed this episode. A bit of ranting is always entertaining.
It was refreshing it wasn’t me for a change … 😐
