Check Out A Sequel To Scythe With Stonemaier’s Expeditions
February 6, 2023 by brennon
Stonemaier Games are expanding its board game collection with a standalone sequel to Scythe. Take on a new adventure in Siberia with Expeditions, a new one-to-five-player game set of exploration and discovery.
Expeditions // Stonemaier Games
A massive meteorite has crashed near the Tunguska River and an ancient corruption has awoken. You will be following Dr Tarkovsky deep into the wilderness as you fund your expeditions and see if you can uncover forgotten artefacts, defeat cunning challenges and come out on top as the best adventurer.
Expeditions Cards // Stonemaier Games
At the heart of Expeditions is a card-driven engine-building game which features similar vibes to Scythe but with different mechanics. Cards played can be used to gain power and different abilities as you move your mechs deeper into strange lands in search of prize artefacts. You can use items that you discover to enhance your mech and push back the corruption that you find on the frontier.

What's nice about this big preview for Expeditions is that there is already a Rulebook for you to go and check out from Stonemaier. The game has been in development for three years and it seems like 2023 is going to be THE time to dive in and get more of a Scythe kick, albeit with a different mechanical vibe. The team are aiming for a GenCon release and then a drop at retail soon after.
More details can be found on the Expeditions page on the Stonemaier Games website so, make sure to dive in and find out more if you're curious.
Will you be keeping an eye out for Expeditions?

The art is wonderfully evocative. Sadly Scythe does not deliver on this world at all. It is a dull engine building game with mechs that cannot cross water, can carry stuff around, and don’t do much else. But the game has a rabid fan base so no doubt this will sell well.
Scythe is a good engine builder but it does take some time to get familiar with the mix of different things going on. I don’t regard myself as part of a rabid fanbase but have always found this one enjoyable, but as ever YMMV. Opinion does seem to be divided somewhat but it is good enough to have held a place on BGG’s top 20 since it came out. Expansions have run their course so a new direction has been taken. I would imagine it will be heavy on game process and light on world feel so will suit those… Read more »
