Returning Warbands Previewed For Warhammer Underworlds
October 22, 2024 by brennon
Games Workshop has begun to plot out the roadmap for Warhammer Underworlds and the new edition of the game. As well as that, they also showed off the returning warbands that will be getting a revamped physical release with both miniatures and cards for organised play.
Year One Roadmap // Warhammer Underworlds
Good news for those wanting to get into the game to begin with. The Embergard Core Game will remain the same throughout the entire edition. This is great for those wanting to get into the game because they have one point of call with which to begin.
From there, new warbands are going to be coming out this year and throughout all of 2025. A new warband plus a new Rivals Deck means that you can combine Warscrolls with a collection of new rules and mechanics.
Talking of warbands, a whole host of returning Warhammer Underworlds warbands are going to be coming back across four Grand Alliance packs. These cover Order, Destruction, Death and Chaos.
Grand Alliance Boxed Sets // Warhammer Underworlds
These sets are great for those who want to get their hands on miniatures that might become hard to get a hold of over the last few years. You will also get the relevant Warscrolls and Fighter cards for each of the factions. You just need to combine them with a Rivals Deck from the Core Game and away you go. Each of the four warbands in the set also suits one particular playstyle from the new Warhammer Underworlds deck but of course, you can mix and match.
Inside the Order set, you'll get...
Ylthari's Guardians // Warhammer Underworlds
Thundrik's Profiteers // Warhammer Underworlds
Myari's Purifiers // Warhammer Underworlds
Hexbane's Hunters // Warhammer Underworlds
If you prefer the taint of Chaos then you can also get this set which contains...
The Dread Pageant // Warhammer Underworlds
Khagra's Ravagers // Warhammer Underworlds
Gorechosen Of Dromm // Warhammer Underworlds
Ephilim's Pandaemonium // Warhammer Underworlds
The forces of Destruction have also been drawn to Embergard by the thrill of combat and the lure of that emberstone that would be perfect for all manner of different rituals that you concoct...
Morgok's Krushas // Warhammer Underworlds
Grinkrak's Looncourt // Warhammer Underworlds
Da Kunnin Krew // Warhammer Underworlds
Blackpowder's Buccaneers // Warhammer Underworlds
Last but not least, the forces of Death will be doing the bidding of Nagash and seeking out places of power for their dark and terrible master.
The Headsmen's Curse // Warhammer Underworlds
The Grymwatch // Warhammer Underworlds
The Crimson Court // Warhammer Underworlds
Kainan's Reapers // Warhammer Underworlds
For those who already have the miniatures here, you can also buy the Warbands Of Embergard set which will come with just the cards for all sixteen of the warbands above.
Warbands Of Embergard // Warhammer Underworlds
All of these sets are going to be available shortly after the release of the new Embergard Core Game alongside the two brand new Warbands and Rivals decks. That means twenty warbands and six decks will be available physically at release.
All other Warbands from the history of Warhammer Underworlds will get digital Fighter cards and Warscrolls for free. These will be available for those wanting to make use of classic warbands that might have come out during the early days of Warhammer Underworlds. There will be a rotation in effect for those diving into organised play at stores and clubs running tournaments but otherwise, you will have free reign. Some older warbands might also get completely new rules to update them in the future!
Could you be tempted to dive back into Warhammer Underworlds or maybe start fresh?

Is it just me, or does GW just seem to flail around hoping one of their fantasy themed games actually sticks?
Nice models, the game just doesn’t do anything for me.
GW killed fantasy a long time ago. Just pull the plug and do moar Spez Muhreenz.
Yeah, AoS has some decent minis (that I’d use for conversions, if anything), but I have zero interest in the lore or the game.
If they wanted “Fantasy 40k” or a non-rank n’ flank game, they could have just translated WH:F into that, or leaned into Mordheim more, rather than destroy Fantasy for AoS.
I suspect with underworlds the models are more popular than the game itself. One aspect with AOS and GW fantasy line is the models are amazing and people re-used them in a lot of other game systems. I think a lot of other games systems maybe need to consider their models used in other system. My problem with say the conquest game is while the models are very nice at large 32mm scale they dont fit into any other range or game I play. In terms of an investment in the hobby they are a poor choice. A warhammer witcher… Read more »
I know exactly *zero* of the lore (because GW lore is usually pretty mid to begin with if you ask me), but Underworlds is a fun game. Just wish GW would stop messing with the formula and making us rebuy stuff.
I had Warhammer from the Harry the Hammer box to whenever AoS killed the world. Lore was fun until it was not.
I have tried to collect some Old World but with the made to order insanity I find myself just wanting to sell off what I’ve picked up and give up on Fantasy.
Still have 40k Orks, Killteams, Necromunda, and Bloodbowl. And Horus Heresy + Legions Imperialis.
Are you suggesting GW pull the plug on AoS? Why would they do that, when it has massively outsold WHF many times over, makes them loads of money (just not 40K money) and has a huge fanbase who actually like collecting, hobbying and playing it?
I get that AoS isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m endlessly fascinated by some folks insistence that their personal tastes and preferences are in fact some sort of objective standard by which the rest of the world should operate.
Oh, that they would indeed pull AOS! Yes, we won’t all agree, I get that; but for me… back to the Old World!
In classic GW style, they lump a bunch of stuff together and make it way harder to get just the thing you want.
That being said, the Chaos box is something I may grab as I like three of those warbands (and own the other already). The jndead box is 50% stuff I want, and can maybe offload the others or repurpose them for something.
Of all these, I like the Tzeentch daemon box – very funky designs.
My fave too.
Exactly. Makes me grit my teeth in utter frustration.
I already own 3 of these that I don’t need to buy again, and the other 3 that I really want are spread over several boxes.
Also, I wish that they’d reissue Morgwaeth’s Blade Coven and Thricefold Discord too.
…and Sons of Velmorn.
