Return To Dark Tower…Returns! Covenant Expansion On Backerkit
July 27, 2022 by brennon
Return To Dark Tower from Restoration Games has...returned! It is now on Backerkit with a new campaign that is funding a second printing of the game AND the new Covenant expansion which adds more to your tabletop adventures with this Fantasy board game.
Return To Dark Tower - Covenant // Restoration Games
We have talked about Return To Dark Tower before here OnTableTop so I won't go into too much detail on the base game. But, this is a revival of a classic 80s game that still uses an electronic tower but also a new app-based system in order to run gameplay. It seems like a LOT of fun even though it does come with a hefty price tag ($190).
Covenant is the newest expansion for Return To Dark Tower thought that adds four new heroes and a bunch of new quests into the equation.
Covenant Components // Return To Dark Tower
Within Covenant, you'll find four new heroes that can be used with the expansion or the base game. The focus this time is on making the most of towering Monuments that are dotted around the landscape. You will need to make offerings to the Gods Of Light and leverage the power of the Monuments in order to save the day.
Monuments // Return To Dark Tower
At the start of a game, one building of each type is removed from play and in their place are situated Monuments. Each of them will require different sacrifices or risks in order to bend their power to your will. As a new bonus action, you can use the Build heroic action to build upon the foundations of a Monument and leverage its power. They come with powerful new Reinforce effects that can help you turn the tide against your foes.
To aid you, you now have four new heroes to choose from.
Astromancer & Swindler // Return To Dark Tower
The Astromancer prepares spells that can be used to harness an array of different effects. The Swindler really plays into the use of luck and the power that offers you.
Warden & Aegis // Return To Dark Tower
You also have the Warden and the Aegis. The Warden is focused on a single target and taking them out with great gusto. You also have the Aegis who can absorb corruption and use it to gain strength. An interesting balancing act to be sure!
These new heroes will also be needed because you'll have to contend with new Doom Skulls and Wasteland Tokens that threaten your kingdoms.
Doom Skulls // Return To Dark Tower
Wasteland Tokens // Return To Dark Tower
Doom Skulls are terrifying because, unlike normal skulls, they can never be removed or cleansed from buildings. They will sit on a building and haunt you for the rest of the game! Wasteland Tokens will corrupt lands in your kingdom and stop you from gaining bonuses from them. PLUS, they keep you rooted to the spot. A Monument will help stop these Wasteland Tokens from appearing so you might want to start building one of those.
This all comes alongside new treasures, encounters and more so it should provide you with an interesting challenge on the tabletop. If you've got your hands on Return To Dark Tower, I could see this being an intriguing next step.
Return To Dark Tower 2nd Printing // Restoration Games
Are you tempted to snap up either the second printing of Return To Dark Tower or perhaps the newest expansion? I know a lot of folks have seriously enjoyed it now their Kickstarter pledges and retail purchases have started to arrive.

Looks like a good game.
Undaunted Aegis demands your physical presence in closer proximity…
Read the reviews on BGG. Seems it’s an app-driven game, where the tower is now superfluous.
