Let’s Play: Nemesis
January 16, 2018 by thisisazrael
We have something special for you today as Az is joined by the Editors for a play-through of prototype board game Nemesis from Awaken Realms.
Nemesis will launch on Kickstarter tomorrow, January 17th, so now is your chance to check out this sci-fi space survival game.
Waking up from the long sleep of deep space travel, the last crew members aboard the ship Nemesis must remember their way through the various sections of the ship to achieve their secret objectives.
Most of the crew will be trying to get the ship back to earth by setting the right coordinates in the cockpit and ensuring at least two of the three engines are in working condition. Others may have contrary objectives such as ensuring one of the other crew does not survive or charting a course to new galaxies.
The other crewmates aren't the only potential obstacle to making it out alive; whilst in hibernation the ship was boarded by alien intruders who pose a constant and fearsome threat to traversing the ship.
As the game hasn't released yet some of the pieces and models are still in prototype form and the rules we follow in the video may change on release.
Would you guide the Nemesis back to Earth?

Play Time: 90 mins
Shooting doesn’t cause a noise roll? What are the numbers around the room hex faces (0 through 4 and title) used for? And, why is there a standing captain figure when he’s eviscerated in this scenario? I think it needs more visual (3D) tokens, maybe as a stretch goal.
At this stage no noise from shooting as they are already in your room.
The numbers 0-4 around room tiles are items remaining.
The character that dies is different every game and there is even a room which let’s you loot gear from dead characters.
Hope that clarifies some stuff for you 🙂 Az
This looked pretty fun. A few confusing rules, and some things that that hopefully will get cleaned up or fixed before it’s finished, but it looks good.
Yea definitely a prototype but one full of potential 🙂 Az
The models look very good quality, but I can’t help feel that I’d like to get a game that comes without them – and then use the miniatures from Aliens Vs Predator…
I see a lot of potential with this game. Really like the random room tiles which will make each play through new. Might be just me, but I get a bit of a Clank! vibe with the ruleset with the noise mechanic. Only issue I see is if Fox going to come down on this game for IP infringement? I mean the game starts with the crew waking up out of cryo-sleep, chest bursting larvae, egg laying queen, alien nest, makeshift flamethrowers, etc. Pretty much key elements from Alien franchise. The aliens themselves have a very Giger look to them.
Just wanted to say, the noise tokens i first thought is want you are making, but on watching a few videos its really the noise the Aliens are making, meaning you hear something, it could be a alien moving around nearby. when you cheep around, since your not making noise, your not drawing the aliens to you… minor detail……
That makes sense since the noise is coming from a neighbouring corridor and not necessarily the one you were in, and the reconnaissance ability of the scout is really her checking for aliens before moving and not being any quieter in her own movement.
I’m definitely backing this one. What a game 🙂 I think @soulman has it right. It is not noise you’re making, but the noise our heroes hear, from aliens scuttling around behind panels, in the vents etc.
great video, amazing game mechanics thanks guys! not sure if I will back it but these days I’m more and more drawn towards boardgames. probably because they have everything in the box what you need to play, which makes it easier to just open the box and give it a go.
Oh no, just watched this and now just backed it. New Year’s resolution gone already.
cracking lets play….. loved how it played out….so close….
Could possibly have done with a scoring system that means there are some base VP for things like surviving, blaze of glory and so on, because it feels like there was no incentive to even try and escape alive once it became clear you had failed your main objective. Maybe that is in there but just not quite clear.
this has all the potential to be every bit the classic space hulk is to the genre.
on the sculpts. i like the intruders, they’re the pick of the bunch. the others i’m happy enough with but the juries out at present with regards to the queen. i like the pose and the basing but not sold on the face and the details. the breeders though are very 2D but i’d just proxy in some large nids or genestealers.
about time that those talented boys in editing got a little stage time. great job Az and the lads.
We got to play a game! 😀
backed after little less than a hour… but just because I was not home 😉 !!
game already looks cool “as is”… sure some of the suggestions here would only make it better 🙂 3d terrain is already “a thing”, but 3d token and more rooms (so that you do not always place the same tiles) would make it even greater. Looking forward to the progress of the KS 8) !!
Like the game mechanics though anything that makes noise in real life should make noise in the game – for example shooting, repairing, opening and closing doors. Slime – another nice touch.
A thought regarding potential stretch goals and new variations in play: a board extension in the form of new board representing a docked ship. Maybe the scenario involves the players having to retrieve something from the other vessel in order to repair Nemesis. Some of them could have an objective that requires the investigation or destruction of something aboard the other vessel. It would offer an alternative escape option and the possibility of other room types not envisaged for Nemesis itself. The board extension could be a space station instead of a ship.
