Plastic Soldier Company Takes to Kickstarter for The Great War
February 8, 2015 by stvitusdancern
Plastic Soldier Company in cooperation with Richard Borg are bringing the next chapter to the the popular Command & Colours games to Kickstarter.
This time they are tackling World War I and all that goes with it, from trench warfare to all out assaults by large number of troops. If you are a fan of Memoir '44 than you will love this game too as it works on the same principle with the hex board and card activations.
You win the game by earning a predetermined amount of victory points either by destroying your opponents units or capturing objectives. Per their Kickstarter page, Will Townshend, President of Plastic Soldier Company tells us that the reason that they are going to kickstarter is because producing a new game is costly and they would like to see what the response would be from the gaming community.
From what I am able to determine it sounds like most of the work is nearly completed and they are looking for funds to bring it to completion. For nice gameplay this might just be what the general ordered.
What do you think. is there room for another Command & Colours edition?

Finally WWI in the C&C system. But only infantry in the box…
If you want a realistic game, artillery must be an off-board asset. Tanks were so rare that including one would be silly, and cavalry was not used when the war got into trenches phase, so yes, welcome to perhaps the least exciting war in the last 200 years in terms of equipment used.
Tanks were a pretty common site in 17-18 during Western Front battles although only on the Allied side
Am wondering, as always with WW1 games that crop up, whether the early and late stages would make for better scenarios.
That said, there is the challenge of an asymmetrical assault on enemy trenches, and it will be interesting to see if C&C can provide a system for that.
There are plenty of interesting scenario’s throughout the war and in all theatres. I guess it depends on the scale of the game
Don’t know if you’ve ever played Memoir, but its quite easy to adjust for company-army sized battles, it’s very cleverly abstracted, and there’s tonnes of scenarios for that game ranging from small airborne insertions to complete D-day beach landings and everything in between. If this follows the same principles (which with the Borg as the designer it really should) then it should be extremely flexible and not just another no-mans-land simulator. should.
I haven’t, though my interest has been piqued by watching a solo play through (which is an important consideration for me) as well as a live game on the Dice Tower a week or two back
It looks a lot of fun,
I got the impression that it may not be the most authentic war game available, but that is (pun warning) countered by an intuitive, fast moving system, with not a lot chart checking
They have more planned – British & German tanks for certain. They are the 4th and 5th planned stretch goals.
Could be a fun game. Will watch with interest.
Backed!
Wow, looks like you get a ton of miniatures with that and a very good price too, I may have to back this one.
I’ve backed it. Looks to be a good game. Not sure I have the skills to do justice to 15mm figures though.
I have heard that the card for this sort of thing is a tad unbalanced.
Might need some more play testing

@chibi, the card mechanic is brilliant in memoir, most of the scenarios are pretty balanced in terms of being able to advance in any sector, you just have to be a bit cunning and build up enough cards to launch a meaningful attack. Few diversions early on can force players to expend cards in that sector early as well, for a ‘luck’ mechanic, it has a lot of strategic and tactical application, though yes, sometimes you just get utterly awful bad luck!
I was musing on the thought of Hawthorn Ridge mine going up @jackdanielsismow
Not sure how it would work out to scale, but it could wipe out a fair chunk of the forces
Backed, love Memoir 44, my top 2 player game. A world war one variant speaks to me, and I love PSC for their 15mm bits anyway so this is a no brainer for me.
Love what these guys do and hope they get bigger and bigger tbh. A lot of gamers use their stuff for Flames of War as its really good quality and a lot cheaper too. 🙂 lets hope they can develop some more rules for other gaming systems , as I think they could possibly punch well above their weight with a little customer support imho.
