Osprey Games are going to be releasing their board game, The King Is Dead, in July 2020 with an updated look and a few tweaks to the mechanics.

The King Is Dead Cover - Osprey Games

In the first version of the game, you played as the members of King Arthur's court who, after his death, have to try and vie for control of the lands and make sure that whatever kingdom rises to claim the throne, favours you the most. You also had to make sure that whichever faction rose to the top was powerful enough to hold of the Saxon threat from across the sea.

In this new edition of the game, the premise is still the same. The King has died and you have to try and plot and scheme your way towards supporting and propping up either the Scottish, Welsh or English in the hope of rising to power and being favoured by them at the end of the game.

All of this is done through the use of very simple mechanics which still carry a lot of weight. Each turn you'll be playing cards which shift coloured cubes around the board, showing which factions have claim over regions of Britain.

The new edition of the game also includes updated graphic design, new artwork and an asymmetrical game mode which takes things to the next level. As someone who was a fan of the previous iteration of the game, this sounds like a lot of fun!

Will you be giving this a go?
