There was plenty revealed for the Mortal Realms of Warhammer: Age Of Sigmar over this past weekend by Games Workshop. We start with some new options for Warcry as a new Starter Set called Catacombs is going to be available on Saturday.

Catacombs Starter Set - Warcry

Within this set, you're going to find all the bits and pieces you need to get playing deep within the fiery catacombs of Varanthax’s Maw inside the Skullpike Mountains. You'll get that themed board alongside all of the terrain here which represents an interior location rather than the wastes of the original.

In addition to the terrain, board, gubbins and more you'll also find two new warbands which are out for blood. You can either side with the flame-wreathed Scions Of The Flame who look more and more impressive each time I look at them.

Scions Of The Flame // Warcry

Yes, they are a little ridiculous looking but I actually think that this might be one of the coolest packs they've done for Warcry. I love the Aqshy (Realm Of Fire) theme that runs through their clothing, armour and weapons and I this offers up a really good look at the variety available to the powers of Chaos in Age Of Sigmar. Getting a look at more of these cults is a bonus for those who love the Ruinous Powers.

If you prefer skulking in the darkness then you also have the rather deadly looking Shadowstalkers.

Shadowstalkers - Warcry

Shadowstalkers // Warcry

These warriors, soul-bound to Morathi, are looking to undertake their own dangerous quests across the Mortal Realms and no doubt steal important relics for their Mistress. They could also just be out for blood, slitting throats and generally causing mayhem amongst the other Grand Alliances....as well as their own.

I'm not so much of a fan of the "shadow" effect that we're seeing here on these miniatures. I get what they were trying to do and it looks ace in the artwork but I think it would take something special to make it look right when painting. You run the danger of them just looking ragged and tattered rather than magical.

Warcry Starter Sets

As well as the two new warbands which come as part of the Catacombs set you'll also be able to snap up four new Starter Set warbands for each of the Grand Alliances. You can pick from Skaven and Kharadron Overlords...

...or Flesh-Eater Courts and Ironjawz. This allows you to play with a different warband which goes beyond the Chaos offerings.

Death & Destruction Warbands - Warcry

In addition to the new warbands, you're also going to be getting a bunch of new books to allow you to use these on the tabletop too. Rules do currently exist for them in the ether but they are going to be collected together as part of four new books which focus on each of the Grand Alliances.

This gives you all of the options you need for playing one of these forces in games of Warcry. This is obviously good for those who want to dip their toe into the world of Age Of Sigmar without collecting a massive army or indeed explore the setting and mechanics of Warcry as something other than a Chaos warband.

Warcry Trailer // Age Of Sigmar

Personally, I think I would have preferred Warcry to have been very centred around the Chaos warbands like it was at the start. I liked that the theme was all focused around these warbands vying for glory and power beneath the gaze of Archaon and it wasn't like they weren't wanting for variety as they've proven that with subsequent releases.

In this case, Games Workshop were damned either way. I can see why people wanted to see new warbands from their armies so they could just dive right in but I still think it lost some of its magic in the doing so. Still, if you've got a good core group that likes to play a certain way then there's no reason you have to even venture into all the additional options!

Warhammer Underworlds: Direchasm

If you prefer your Age Of Sigmar battles to be short and sweet then you've also got a new set for Warhammer Underworlds coming soon called Direchasm.

In Direchasm you're still going to be following the flow of the story through the Beastgrave but with two new warbands. One one side you've got the new Lumineth Realm-lords and Myari’s Purifiers and on the other, the Dread Pageant who are Hedonites Of Slaanesh.

In addition to the new warbands and new accessories, you'll also find a load of additional stuff for those playing some of the existing warbands in Warhammer Underworlds. There is also an entirely new set of mechanics based around Primacy and Hunger. I'm sure we'll find out more in time about that!

So, that is quite a lot of information for Age Of Sigmar for you to digest. Make sure to drop your thoughts on it all below!
