Here there be dragons (finally!)

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game is getting its first expansion in five years, and it's one we've been waiting for - Daenerys Targaryen is being added to the battle for the Iron Throne.

Make your enemies call you Khaleesi as you rise up to conquer Westeros and rule the seven kingdoms.

Starting off on her own sideboard (presumably because her storyline needs to begin off the continent in Essos), Daenerys will have the ability to make her opponents disregard power tokens equal to combat strength difference.  It's not quite burning your enemies alive, but it's a start.

However, unleashing vengeful dragons is not the only change Fantasy Flight Games have announced for the 2003 board game.  The Targaryen expansion also includes House Arryn as an eighth playable house, and the Iron Bank of Braavos provides new funding opportunities for players.  Finally, there will be a "vassal" system in place to handle factions without gamers at the table.

With the popularity of the books and the TV series, I'm a little surprised it took Fantasy Flight Games so long to announce this expansion, although if that extra time has allowed the development of a cohesive gameplay mechanic for the dragon queen, then it will have been worth the wait.

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game is an older game, but the Song of Ice and Fire franchise is growing across all media so it's good to see Fantasy Flight Games remaining current without pandering to the hype.  Valar Morgulis.

Do you have a preferred Game of Thrones faction?
