Monopoly: Warhammer 40,000 Is Now A Thing…Grimdark Banking At Its Finest
July 16, 2018 by brennon
We didn't need it, and I'm fairly sure no one asked for it, but Monopoly: Warhammer 40,000 is now a thing.
In a frankly bizarre turn of events, USAopoly and Games Workshop are working together to create this new version of Monopoly. It features a few tweaks and changes with recognisable planets, tokens and more on the board but it remains the same game that you have...quite deservedly...probably ignored for decades.
It boggles my mind that they went to the effort of creating the new tokens, placed new artwork across the board and such, but then still kept the original artwork for Go To Jail, Jail and Free Parking. By the Holy Emperor just change it to fit the aesthetic of the universe at least!
I'm sure this will appeal to someone and if you enjoy it then go for it and pick this up. This screams of a gift that your Nan buys you at Christmas because she heard you liked Warhammer 40,000 once in a distant conversation.
So, yep. Monopoly: Warhammer 40,000 is certainly a thing. Back to your regularly scheduled news soon...
...will you be getting this?

To think people got upset about 40k kids books. Someone is going to lose their mind over this.
The kids books sound like they’ll be good fun. This just seems kinda pointless.
People could just play Relic which is a roll and move game, nice and simple, has that Warhammer 40,000 feeling to it, and they’d have a better time.
But, if you want something simple and familiar to play then I suppose this has its place. Play what you like folks heh
Are they not taking about Relic going out of production? Ben.
I believe that WizKids is going to be bringing back that game.
I think though that you will see this for sale in the major supermarkets,WH Smith’s and other high toy shops that you wouldn’t see relic etc being sold
I reckon that there just trying to open up new markets for revenue
You got to be kidding me… 40k themed Monopoly sounds like worst kind of cash in.
They will get their money back with all the Die hard’s just to have one up on the shelves and as you say if you get one you won’t throw it away.
There are loads of differnt versions of monopoly on the market now and this will appeal to both the die hard gamer for novelty value and the die hard monopoly collectors of which i know a few. The corner spaces are the same in all versions to help retain their link to the original monopoly game
I get that @dogboydiesel but it just seems weird to me to go to all the effort to make it look grimdark and then have that artwork look at odds to everything else.
Surely by the name ‘Monopoly’ on the front of the box that is enough to retain a link to that original game without it looking silly?
@brennon you forgot Monopoly being plastered on the centre of the board, also looking at odds with the rest of the artwork.
@brennon It might just be a requirement by the Monopoly people. “Nightmare before Christmas” has the same odd style ( http://usaopoly.com/games/monopoly-nightmare-christmas-25-years ) Got to agree that it does look very weird for a setting as grimdark as 40k. Design by template : – 32 Fate and Glory cards – 32 houses renamed Outposts – 12 hotels renamed Fortifications – 28 Title Deed cards featuring key locations from the Warhammer 40,000 universe – 1 Pack of Warhammer 40,000 themed Money, renamed souls ie : rename stuff, replace artwork, cash in It kind of sucks, because there was so much more work… Read more »
yes its to generic I think anyone could make this with some stickers.
“Win Second Prize in a Beauty Contest collect a Genestealers Kiss”
Well they have made so many versions of monopoly whats another one to add to the cash in’s I am sure there are many folk that would buy this. However if I am going to play monopoly it will be using the Classic set, cannot beat putting a hotels on Park Lane and Mayfair.
What I love is the way they never change the cornors of the board.
Is ‘Salary’ just a placeholder for the local currency and £/$/€/etc will be substituted in for the localisations, or will you actually be buying stuff in ‘salary’? ?Surely that’s another thing that could’ve been themed?
Usapoly website says that money is replaced by ‘souls’ …
Not sure why they’d still refer to it as salary, but then the design isn’t exactly inspired.
This is a really odd one. From a business perspective, I can see why GW’s licencing group signed it off, it will after all bring in some cash. It will also likely attract some new gamers to Wh40k, especially those who think that gaming is just Monopoly, Risk and Cluedo. But from a branding perspective, it’s an awful clash and for me, cheapens the WH40k universe.
Are the houses and hotels still little green and red things? Or are they Gothic temples encrusted in skulls? Or Leman Russ and Baneblade tanks??
Talking of Risk, surely that would’ve been a better mashup between 40k and a classic board game.
Good point. Perhaps even Cluedo, with a ‘who killed the emperor?’. Was it Horus in the Sanctorum with a Melta Gun or Rogal Dorn in the Ministorum Chamber with a Power Axe?
houses = outposts
hotels = fortifications

Well that’s something at least. Still, you get to Go To Jail rather than being dealt with by a nice chap from the Officio Assassinorum, so perhaps it’s not as Grim Dark in the future as we all thought. And parking is free, which is more than can be said for my local high street.
It’s not April First? Is it April First? I’m kinda confused now I was sure it wasn’t but after reading this it has to be doesn’t it?
“This screams of a gift that your Nan buys you at Christmas because she heard you liked Warhammer 40,000 once in a distant conversation.”
And I am sure that is all it was ever meant to be
I just had a thought … Monopoly 40k is brilliant.
It makes you hate each other just like the various in-universe factions.
You could use it as a campaign generator.
If you win then you won’t have to pay ‘rent’ but you do get to destroy their outpost/fortification …
Someone will love this. Personally I can’t think of a worse game than Monopoly. I’d genuinely rather my friends and I had a wazzing contest, at least we’d still be friends at the end.
With all the variant licenses sold of “Monopoly”, someone is laughing all the way to the bank, on a regular basis…
I can see why GW might want to do this: zero effort for the chance at making a little bit of profit and getting a little bit of exposure for their brand… But what an awful job they’ve made of it. The clashes of themes is so uninspired, and that’s assuming you actually like Monopoly. They could have made this with an ironic twist or they should have gone all in and made it completely themed. I can see this being bought by people who don’t know what they’re buying, but I can’t see many people actually being pleased to… Read more »
